We just got back from a 3 week trip to Europe and one of the cities we visited was Dubrovnik Croatia. Beautiful city full of history, great food, and wonderful people. We rented an apartment on the hillside overlooking the old town. The owner was one of the highlights of staying at this particular apartment. He is a retired engineer who now lives off his vaca rental plus retirement savings. He owns his unit outright and rents it for 80 Euros per night. It is almost completely booked through winter so it is a steady income for him.
He treated us like family during our stay and also with a dental emergency by getting us an appointment with the best dentist in Dubrovnik on their day off!
In his apartment he provided his home made family brandy which was delicious!
His life consist of catering to his guest, walking to the old town daily to visit friends and family, and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. This man lives in a magical place and loves what he does.

@Ryan Billingsley check out my profile picture. I'm also on the wall overlooking Dubrovnik and the Agean Sea... We stayed in the old town and I definitely checked out real estate prices, etc. while there. Lovely country and people. We drove from Zagrab to Split to Korcula to Dubrovnik and then back up (via a quick trip through Bosnia). My overseas travels always remind me how much more simply we Americans could live if we chose to - and less financially controlled by these giant houses and massive amounts of stuff we allow to eat up our funds...)

@Teri Feeney Styers So true about living a more simple life. Consumerism in America is out of control!! It sounds like you were able to see a ton of Croatia! I would have loved to see more, we stayed 6 nights in Dubrovnik. We did travel to Mostar Bosnia and Kotor Montenegro which were both wonderful.
