Using AI for your auto response messaging with guests? Be careful...

Do you use AI for auto response messaging?  Does it save you time? Well it might come at a cost.

I was just looking at one of many Facebook groups for visitors of Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge and a guest just posted screen shots of their conversation with their "host".  One of the many problems they were having was sewage was backing up and leaking into the basement bathroom for days.  They had sent messages to the host through the vrbo platform with pictures of the issue for a couple days.  The screen shots of the conversation showed a response from the host each time starting with, "Can you answer a few questions so I can understand more.." When the guest asked for a phone number the response was "I am not available but you can call my assistant at..." Note the assistant never answered the call.

The guest did not know they were talking with AI the whole time. I quickly could see it was AI when looking at the screenshot of the messaging. Now the owner has two problems. First, sewage has been sitting in their basement for multiple days. Second, the guest is telling everyone to avoid this property like the plague (expect bad platform review and Google reviews).

So while AI might save you time temporarily it might cost you more time, maintenance and cashflow reduction in the end.

(And yes I noticed the misspelling in the title to the post, but BP will not let me correct it and I am a terrible at typing on a phone:)

I never use AI for anything. I personally believe that it will be the downfall of our future. People who rely too much on AI can't figure things out for themselves means the end of innovation.

My 2 cents...

I use AI more every day, but would never use it to reply to guests that might be having a problem.  I need to know this.

Agree with John. There's a place for bot messages, but guest issues aren't one of them.

Hospitality fundamentally involves personal interaction and crafting exceptional guest experiences. Please avoid using AI for guest communications.

And that, my friends, is why I am "old school" and hands on and personal with my Guest interactions.  (granted I don't have 20+ STRs).

AI is great for routine FAQs, but it can't replace real-time human judgment, especially when something serious hits. Using it blindly is how hosts end up with disasters like that sewage situation… unanswered calls, generic replies, and now a public reputation mess.

Automation should support you, not run your business. When guests have an emergency, nothing replaces an actual human who can act fast.

Your post is a good reminder: AI saves time, but only if you stay present and keep oversight.

I never rely on AI either. I’ve seen too many mistakes that it makes. I tried using google AI a few weeks ago to ask what number battery my car key fob took. It told me the wrong number. If it can’t even get that right and still act like it’s knowledgeable, it’s really unreliable.

People are getting so lazy.  Why take the risk of AI messing things up, when as a host you are responsible for ensuring problems are handled (or hiring an actual person to do that).

AI simply lacks common sense. I read a recent study which found that 23% of AI responses across all platforms contained inaccurate info. Some AI's that carry trusted names are wrong more than they are right like Google Gemini which is wrong 60% of the time and Elon Musk's Grok 3 which is wrong a "shocking" 94% of the time. https://futurism.com/study-ai-search-wrong

It's not shocking to me. It wasn't too long ago that "I read it on the internet" meant it was probably BS. AI just "learns" from the internet. We've only got beginner-level AI right now and people are trusting it as if we have already developed Artificial Super Intelligence (AI that surpasses human intelligence), except that is still hypothetical and a long ways away if even possible.
