My name is Brock Price, and I am currently a senior at West Virginia University, studying finance. I have had a passion for saving and investing since I was very young. I have an entrepreneurial spirit and am looking to learn more about real estate investing. My studies have allowed me to gain a strong understanding of traditional investment instruments, but have not exposed me to alternative investment opportunities such as real estate. My parents have flipped several houses in the last 5 or so years, but did not get into the investment real estate game till later in life. I am seeking to learn as much as possible about real estate so that I can build a portfolio that enables me to achieve financial freedom as soon as possible.
Brock, sounds like you’re already off to a strong start. Having a finance background and growing up around flips gives you a good base. Real estate is different from traditional investing, but it’s something you can pick up quickly once you start exploring deals and talking to people in the space.
If your goal is early financial freedom, real estate can definitely help you get there. What part of investing are you thinking about starting with? Happy to keep the conversation going!
Thank you for the insights! I am looking to get into short-term and long-term rentals in particular, but honestly open to all forms of real estate investing.
@Brock Price, great introduction and you are getting started at the perfect time. Since you already understand traditional finance, adding real estate knowledge will put you in a strong position early in your career.
From a tax perspective, the biggest advantage you have right now is time. When you start young, you get multiple opportunities to use strategies like depreciation, cost segregation, and 1031 exchanges to grow your portfolio while keeping taxes low. Even your first property can set up years of compounding if it is structured correctly.
You also have the benefit of learning real estate before your income becomes higher, which gives you more flexibility with things like material participation, long term rental planning, and how you structure ownership as you scale.
