Water still flowing even after main shutoff

Water still flowing even after main shutoff

Camby, IN · Member since 2013 · 12 posts · 4 votes

We had a pipe bust and we turned off the water at the main so that we could prevent further water damage and to repair the broken pipe. Well, the water never stopped flowing. It is impossible for us to glue on the new pipe with the water spraying out. Is this a problem with our main that should be addressed with the water company? Or is this something else that we just don't know about. We are first time landlord/homeowners and have a duplex. Please help because we have been without water for a while and we know how to fix the pipes we just can't fix our water flow problem.

Sounds like cpvc pipe , or pvc , grab a ball valve , leave it open , glue it on the pressure side , let glue ry for 5 minutes , then close the valve . now you can fix the rest of the pipe with no water flow

There is more than likely another main at the street or property had this happen multiple times on large properties.

We had a similar situation trying to figure out what was causing a water leak. Water would appear on a loading dock that was below ground level.

Was it a pipe burst under the loading dock?

Was it an irrigation pipe that broke? We turned off the water, nothing.

Finally, we had a leak detector come out. He figured out it was the fire sprinkler system pipe from outside, a flange was leaking. And they have special certifications, so $$$ to get fixed.

Glad to hear it's fixed.  Shark Bites are a great way to solve problems like this til the plumber (or in this case the city) can get out.

Call a professional plumber/or have owner call. This is not something the bigger pockets community should try trouble shooting for you. Water causes too much damage to mess around with

Heather have not read all the post,  but I have had this issue about 20 times!

It is the city water meter, and they are responsible to change it out.

Must call water department and explain to them your issue.

Tell them there is a leak and your plumber can not fix it until it is corrected.

They will schedule it and change it out.

Bigger Pocket members are pretty smart!

I hope the water isn't still running, as the post is from 7 years ago.
