You generally don't change zoning for a single house. If you are looking to change the USE to MF you need to look at the current zoning and what is allowed for the zone it is in. Check your town zoning maps and the description of that zone sometimes SF and duplex are allowed in a zone, sometimes only SF. If allowed the building dept in town could tell you what is required. A conversion to MF today is not usually a novice activity. you have firewalls, separating electric, water etc.
