I have tried and tried to get a google phone number to no avail. I have even tried to get one in neighboring towns and nothing comes up.
My question to you is what other options are out there. I dont want to use my cell number on bandit signs and I dont want to pay for another phone and phone line.

Buy an 800# or one of their local numbers from Ring Central. Fairly cheap. My 800 is only $30 a month and I have the number forwarded to my number. If you return a # just block the caller id with *67

If Google voice is not an option, there are several paid services that will provide this, you may have to pay a small fee, but probably only a few dollars a month. Or maybe magic jack would work for you, I tried it once and couldn't get it to work, but it seems like something that may work for you.

I use google voice and ring central. Ring central is a phone and fax service you can use from you smart phone. I think I paid like $7 per month??
Ring central offers the same features and a little more than google voice.

Yes, its basically your phone with that phone number over the top of it that they see. It's no different then if I put a redirect code over an old domain to my new domain so when they type in the url they go to my new one or email forwarding.

Well, with google voice it's not true, you will get a voicemail with the google voice service separate from your personal phone. The way I have it setup is that if they are not presenting their A-number (the number they are calling from) They will get a prompt asking them for their name before they get through to me, then when the call comes to my cell phone (or whatever phone I have the google voice pointed to) I get a recorded message with the persons name and the option of accepting the call or send it to voice-mail. Great feature, eliminates a lot of spam.

Sorry Travis, should be soon though, hear they are expanding a lot... have you tried getting one from a city further away from you? Or do you want to keep a local number?

I don't know anything about Google Voice. I was referring to his question on Ring Central. Google Voice looks interesting though never investigated it.

By the way Travis you don't need a landline for magic jack I believe its 19.00 for a year of service but you still have to buy the "magic jack" you then plug the magic jack into the usb port on your computer and hook up a landline type phone to the magic jack!

I use phone.com. I have a few numbers with them including 800 or 866. I use one number for fax and the other for voice and vm. It has all the voip features like call forwarding (I forward all calls to my cell), direct to vm, or routing (push 1 for Joe, push 2 for Bob, etc). There are about 15 features but I do not use them all. All this is not free, about $15 month.

You should check it out. Google Voice is da bomb. I have 2 GV numbers so I have 3 different numbers ringing through on my cell phone. I can make outgoing calls and select my GV number to show on caller ID.
It's an incredible free service. Hope it remains free.

No landline connection required for Magic Jack. You just need a phone to plug into your USB port. That's it. Magic Jack takes the place of landline service.

To add my .02, I would look into PBnext.com. It's web based and very user friendly. You get one local number and one toll free number included with your service which runs just under $30 per month. You can set it up with different queues and extensions depending on what your needs are and you can set it up to forward calls to you when you are away from your desk or after certain times of the day or night. Or you can send it all to voicemail. Been using it for awhile now and really like it.

I bought an 800 number from tollfreenumbers.com, Bill Quimby. Then I transferred the number to phone.com
I compared virtual pbx's and found phone.com to be the best value for me. I get all sorts of menus, prerecorded messages, and forwards and extensions, and after buying the 800 #, I think it is less than $20/per month.
And you don't need a landline for magicjack, just a broadband internet connection and a USB port on a PC. The number comes with the MagicJack itself, and is completely portable. You can plug it into your desktop or your laptop. But the broadband connection is a must.

I've used ring central for a while, you can have multiple mailboxes "for management press 1" etc.
Also, anyone can fax to that number and it shows up as a .pdf in my email. Faxing out is as easy as attaching and attachemtn to an email as well.
My basic service is about $16/mo after taxes and fees. I've been really happy with it. It even has nice on hold music for that extra level of credibility. :)

I have a Google Voice number, works great! I have a majic jack, not a big fan of it, but it does work. I ended up just adding a line to my cell phone plan for $10 a month and now i have a seperate phone and number for my rentals. That was the option most convenient for me

I use ring central and like it very much. I can expand my serivce by adding a lines at anytime. It has a nice Iphone and Ipad app too for when I am on the road.
I also use the google voice for local ads and bandit signs.

I use Ring Central as well. I have a separate fax number, and an extra local number is just $5 more. Calls get routed to my cell first and if I don't pick up goes back to voice mail. I find the voice quality Better than voyage which I had a couple of years ago. I don't know about vonage now.
