Cannabis legalization and landlords mitigation plan

As we all know Cannabis became legal in Canada few weeks ago and tenants are allowed to have a small grow up (up to 5 plants if I am not mistaken)

How are you handling it to make sure things don’t get out of control without crossing the line?

Cheers

@Matt K. Everyone is using the extreme 4 plant grow process, CLEARLY NO ONE ON THIS THREAD GROWS. Also you have to be stealing power and a criminal if you grow pot, right? And last time I checked it’s 2018 no one actually smokes flower... they smoke concentrates. As long as no one is cooking meth or turning a unit into a grow operation then I you’d have a hard time finding out who is growing pot, unless they admit this up front. How does the law proceed with protecting people that want to grow? If they aren’t smoking can you kick them out for growing? I grow lots of things indoors and have a pretty elaborate set up. Yes I own my home but I would give a lot of push back to a complex or landlord if they didn’t allow me to produce my own plants. Pot or not growing things inside is completely safe and actually rather therapeutic. Maybe some of us on this thread need to try some new ways of thinking since POT is LEGAL in our brotherly county!

This is topic is not primarily about growing plants. It is about smoking. If you do not smoke pot then you do not grow marijuana plants. If you have plants you are smoking.

    1 + 1 = 2

@Jami Kloet ..... That’s indeed another wrench into it !

I haven’t heard about how CMHC rules intertwine with the pot regulation..... another item to our due diligence todo list. I do know banks won’t provide mortgages for properties that are tagged as grow ups even if they were properly remediated. A friend of mine was trying to buy a beautiful house that used to be a grow up (considerably below market value) but they couldn’t get a mortgage .... and it was remediated but the record stays on for 10 years.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts

Wasn't the main point of this topic insurance not covering loss due to a grow...?

"Wasn't the main point of this topic insurance"

Yes, No , Maybe. not sure if the OP got sidetracked or if insurance was the main theme. In rereading I sense his concern was with controling the number of plants but very quickly morphed to insurance. :(

@Dave Passey Hey Dave I apologize I didn’t see the above post mentioning that insurance companies wouldn’t be covering fire damage from grow lights. That seems strange that they could somehow include that when, as mentioned by others, we have the threat of fires from so many other household products as well. That being said I think your right in excluding growers if it’s going to add potential risks. It’s just a bummer because that’s a large customer base. Imagine if you had to exclude all drinkers..

@Jeremy Blevins, All good my man. There are just too many things in life that insurance will or won't arbitrarily cover at various times. My guess would be that in a couple of years this will all be a moot point anyway.
