What Does Success in Real Estate Investing Actually Look Like?
This might be a slightly unpopular observation.
I’ve been around real estate investing for about a decade now, and I’ve noticed a certain type of image that gets shared a lot in our space — the whiskey glass, the cigar, the dim lighting. It’s usually meant to signal success.
Nothing wrong with enjoying a good whiskey or cigar. If that’s your thing, go for it.
But sometimes it makes me think about how we define and showcase success in this industry.
Social media tends to highlight certain signals: door counts, luxury photos, “made it” moments. Yet a lot of the things that actually matter in the long run don’t show up as easily in a picture.
Over time I’ve started valuing different markers of success more:
• Health and energy
• Time to actually enjoy life
• Building something sustainable
• Peace of mind
Because the truth is, you can have a large portfolio and still feel burned out or unhealthy if everything else is out of balance.
These days I find myself less impressed by the optics of success and more impressed by discipline, consistency, and people who build a life they genuinely enjoy living.
Curious how others here think about this.
What does success in real estate investing look like to you today compared to when you first started?
Is it door count, freedom, lifestyle, something else entirely?
