An owner update shouldn't be a list of everything you did that week.
It should help the owner understand what's happening in their property business.
A useful STR report should answer five questions:
1. What happened? Bookings received, guest issues handled, maintenance completed, and other important activity.
2. What matters? The information that affects revenue, guest experience, property condition, or operations.
3. What needs attention? Outstanding repairs, recurring complaints, booking gaps, or unresolved issues.
4. What changed? Changes in booking pace, performance, expenses, or operational priorities.
5. What should we do next? The recommended actions, decisions required, and opportunities worth reviewing.
That's the difference between activity reporting and decision-support reporting.
As an STR Virtual Assistant, I believe reporting should do more than show that work was completed. It should help owners understand the results, identify risks, and make informed decisions.
A good STR manager doesn't just complete tasks. They help the owner understand the business.
Owners want three things every month: what came in, what went out, and what needs a decision. A one-page statement with those numbers beats a long email. Anything else is noise until there is a real decision to make.
I have 4 VA's in the Phillipines. They definitely help keep things organized for me. Just like most things in this business and in life, they are only as good as they are trained and the systems you set up they operate within.
