10/23/12 UPDATE: The Influence System Has been Removed from BiggerPockets.

INFLUENCE & VOTING

We've established a point system for the forums (soon to expand to our entire site), which takes into account a member’s participation. You can gain both positive and negative influence based upon what you do on the site.

The goal of this influence system is to reward those members who not only help their fellow users, but also those who help the forums to run smoothly. As you can see from the chart below, those who participate by posting will gain influence points. The real points come, however, when others deem your posts as helpful (by voting – see below), or when you help us to rid the site of junk & spam.

On the other hand, as you can see, the impact of spamming the site, not following the rules (we need to edit or delete your posts), or worse, is severe in terms of your influence points.

Voting

Members can vote for a forum topic or reply if they find it interesting or helpful. At the top right of any post, you’ll see a vote icon. Just click the icon and you’ll give an endorsement to that post, and influence points to the poster. FYI - You can’t vote for your own posts.

Inviting New Members

By helping BiggerPockets to grow through inviting your friends and colleagues to join you on the site, you can gain substantial influence points.

Influence Point System:

Kevin-

You have a 10:1 ratio (approximately) of influence to posts. I have done my own non-scientific method of analyzing this and found it to be about "right" for strictly RE posters.

Here are my findings:

Strictly posters and generally top posters carry roughly a 10:1 ratio. These are your J Scotts and Mike M's. They are generally forum posters (no bulletins or blogs)

Political posters carry closer to a 5:1 ratio. I think this is because they do not get as many influential points in political forums (and now no influence). There are still some very good RE posters but they also post a lot in the political forum, which reduces their ratio. J Scott seems to be the exception to this rule, and I think its because his RE posts usually garner a lot of votes and he posts quite a bit in the RE forums as well (and was voted top Rehab poster).

20:1 ratio posters are usually posters who do other activities than post in the forums (blogs, bulletins, etc.) These are your Bryan Hancocks, Steve Babiak, and Charles Perkins). Exception to this rule is Vikram who has a high influential ratio because his posts (like J Scotts) typically are very well thought out and have high vote counts.

So, in conclusion, your 10:1 ratio is spot on if you are just a RE forum poster.

Again, this is my non scientific analysis.

I like it, Josh. It's great this site weeds out the spam, not a lot of sites do that!

Josh, What about having the votes for an individual post having a - factor as well as the + factor.

You may have to set in place something that makes sure that one person can not look for and post a negative vote on more than one of the same persons posts. And maybe the negative vote would not take effect until 5 different people voted negative for that one post.

    Josh,
I agree with jawsette; voting down a post will be needed. That way a viewer can see that a post has a high negative score and not follow any (likely bad) advice contained therein.

I'm certainly open to the negative voting to reflect garbage posts and bad advice, but we are concerned about people trying to penalize others by voting down their posts.

Do you hit someone's influence who has their post voted down?

Do you gain influence by voting someone down?

We want to try and keep it positive, and after much debate amongst a good group of advisors we decided to not allow it.

I'm open to more suggestions. Lets get other ideas and if something sounds like it'll work, we'll certainly see what we can do.

    So . . . .

Yes, I can feel my influence growing.

Good idea Josh. Now it's not just the quantity but the quality here on BP.

Keep em coming. I just noticed that influence thing and was wondering.

    Josh,

Negative scoring doesn't have to serve to penalize the influence rating of the poster.

I would stipulate that anybody wishing to place a negative rating on a post will be required to provide a written explanation in the form of a post appended to the thread.

As jawsette said in her post, if you do use the negative rating to impact somebody's influence score, then there should be some threshhold of negative votes that must be reached before that occurs.

But my take is this: I'm not out to "punish" some person; I'm more inclined to not see some innocent viewer of a post (that should have a bad rating) get punished by following something that they could have been warned to avoid by the negative rating.

Hope that clarifies and makes sense.

PS. I gave a plus vote to the earlier post from jawsette.

Thanks guys! We'll explore it once we get through the rest of the changes.

That said, we've added influence points for participants of the Bulletin System and Article System. You can see the changes in the first post in this thread.

Tim - Thanks for the heads up. You aren't supposed to be able to vote your own posts . . . that'll be fixed very shortly.

How about an influence section in the stats listings.

Just like the others; this week, this month.

i like the idea of more than one member being involved in a vote down before it is counted and or a comment to be reviewed before the demerit.

People can be snippy sometimes, especially when politics are discussed which does occur at times

I think voting for quality is a good idea.

I think someone that has learned from a thoughtful writing should able to give a good vote and be clear about what was valuable is helpful to others.

Negative votes, well, that is subject to interpretation.

    Good job, Josh, well done.

Not yet, Tony, but there will be in the next few days. That's a biggie, of course, as referrals help us to grow the site.

    Josh,

When someone votes for one of your posts, how does one know who made the vote for you and when?

Are the referral points and group threads now active for the voting system?

Hey Will. That should be in effect in the next few days as well. As you know, I was traveling and we're just now getting caught up.

Keep me to my word, though.....

No problem. I was actualy under the beliefe that it already existed. A few weeks ago, someone PM'd me and thanked me for the vote. How did they know I voted for them? (I did of course, just curious)

Maybe they gathered it from something you said in a reply? There was no way for them to know for sure, BTW.
