What's going on with Realty Shares

Got an email from Realty Shares today was wondering if anyone had any insight or thoughts.  I am copying the notification.

An important message from RealtyShares

To our platform investors and operating partners:

Five years ago, RealtyShares was founded with a mission to connect capital to opportunity. With over $870 million invested across more than 1,100 projects, we have built one of the top online real estate investment platforms. We’re helping investors meet their financial goals and deploying capital to real estate operating companies to execute value-add and development strategies for properties across the U.S.

As an early stage company, we have relied upon venture capital to fund our operations. Over the past six months, RealtyShares aggressively pursued a number of financing options to continue growing the business. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to secure additional capital. As a result, we will not offer new investments or accept new investors on the RealtyShares platform.

From this point forward, RealtyShares’ focus will be servicing our existing investors and approximately $400 million of assets under management. This transition will have no impact on the underlying real estate investments. Investments will continue to be managed and distributions will continue to be made. Investors will continue to receive asset management updates and year-end tax information.

We are committed to serving our existing investors and sponsors and have a team dedicated to supporting our ongoing operations.

For what it's worth, two (delayed) months worth on interest on one investment just paid out.  Doesn't reflect on RS yet, but seems a third party servicing vendor has kicked in.

I have searched on line multiple reviews. Most is neutral.

I do not put much confidence with these firms. Just my opinion.

I got the same type of payment on the 130 bryant avenue investment.

It is my speculation, the long term winners will be platforms who are nothing more than an exchange (like the NYSE or similar public exchanges). The sponsor of the projet is what people should be focusing on. People who invest in public shares do not invest because of the exchange. They invest in the company (Sponsor).

Where my analogy breaks down is the ability to trade in and out of a position after the initial offer (secondary market vs IPO if you know the lingo).

@ John Corey   I agree, you have to be willing to lock up money for awhile but isn’t that the essence of R/E itself?  I think CF is still evolving.  And for this to evolve in a positive way, there has to be some sort of ranking system of sponsors so if they f up it would be like a stain on their performance history and that would have to involve some sort of cooperation between CF platforms, sort of like apartment owners and bad tenants.  It would not surprise me that a good handful of the bad boys on RS will be finding their way over to some of the other platforms.  I am almost certain that a million bucks was stolen out of one deal I was in so these two idiots could live the high life.  They quit paying last year and they are basically insolvent now and the money was not used to buy and fix houses yet they are out there raising money again.  I highly doubt RS will do anything, they are winding down.  It would take some federal indictments to be handed down with lengthy prison sentences to follow to let all the sponsors know they are being watched should they be thinking of crossing the line.

I would be surprised if Ms. Hellman took over a bunch of debt deals.. she exited that space 3 or so years ago.. and her business is doing well taking over a floundering ship could be high risk for her.

I saw that Nav Athwal has started a new gig.. kind of like a fund to fund.. not sure if they have any traction yet.
