Has anyone moved states recently? How was it and why the move?

Question

I am considering a move from New York to somewhere on the southeast. Would love to hear from others who have done it. I am single, own a few rentals in Raleigh, and grew up in Long Island. I am completely open but like warm weather and the idea of house hacking a few more properties. I'm thinking of starting the search based on location first, then figure out job/company in the area.

to me growing up in CA in the 50 60 70s  the Carolinas remind me of that time period between 70s and now in CA  just BLOWING up

like CA a lot of variety of things to do.. from ocean to mtns..  etc.. and price points that are still great or very low based on other major metro areas for the same quality..  parts of Charleston though are very high and compare to other markets were new builds sell for 500 to 1000 a foot.   its not Palo Alto at 2000 a foot yet.. but getting there.

We did! We escaped Southern California back home to the western suburbs of Minnesota! It's been great! There are things I miss but I love it. MN has so much to offer. The Twin Cities is beautiful. It is so kid friendly and the public schools where we are are better than the private schools in Cali. The education system in California is, for the most part, broken.

That said, housing is expensive in MN especially if you want the good schools. In general, the top school districts are Edina, Minnetonka, and Wayzata. (Also Mahtomedi but that's really small). However, if you hunt and hunt you can still find FHA level properties. Also, if you don't care about school districts and/or are comfortable with not the top ranked but say next level -- which are also GREAT schools - there are many, many wonderful places to live. The parks and lakes and restaurants and everything is awesome here.

I was so worried about making the leap and it's been great! The only hard part is we still have a house in California that we built at the end of 2015 and want to get out of!

Well, I've done it but not recently. But I did ultimately go from the NYC area to the southeast. Raleigh is a booming area right now. If you can't find a job there you just don't want to work. Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte, Greenville/Spartanburg, Charleston, Asheville all areas that are on fire right now. @Jay Hinrichs is building Charleston 2.0 so you could always hit him up to see what he knows of for work down there.

@Jonathan Farber We are escaping the high cost of living in Denver for a move to the glamorous city of Cleveland! We are looking at either a live-in reno or house hacking a duplex there to drastically cut our expenses and snowball savings to invest in that market. Thinking it’s a 3-5 year plan before moving to Charleston. Jobs that allow us both to work remote was key!

7 months ago moved from Chicago to Raleigh. Move was completely life-style based, and fortunately I was young enough where the down-side was minimal, and had all the up-side. These days its unbelievably easy to pack everything up via a moving company, find a place to rent within days (even in A and B apartments/townhomes) and get movers to unpack you. Terrifying at first but, as with all things in life, feels like I could do it at the drop of a dime now.

@Jonathan Farber id vote for Raleigh.  Great sea for jobs and rentals.  I moved here almost 2 years ago and love it.  Moving sucks though, no way around that

@Jay Hinrichs thanks for the reply.  I will start looking into Charleston.  It seems like a strong option for a lot of reasons.  Any other areas in the south east you are liking/looking at right now.  Ideally I’d like to house hack for a few consecutive years like I did in Raleigh with OO loans.

@JD Martin thanks for sharing!  I lived in Raleigh for 3 years but moved back for work.  I just find myself wondering “what was my motive for doing this?”

I will start checking out the cities other than Raleigh you mentioned!
