Is a 100 million RE portfolio a reasonable goal?

Is a 100 million RE portfolio a reasonable goal?

Member since 2019 · 215 posts · 94 votes

Hello everyone, I’m currently a junior in high school. I would like an asset amount of 100 million(not necessarily net worth) around my 50s-60s. I plan on starting to invest in RE ASAP! Most likely around 20-21 if not sooner(as I have heard 2 years of work experience is needed to secure most loans). I would just like to get you guy’s thoughts on this topic as I don’t see many people talking about 9 figure portfolio goals. Thanks for any input you guys have, stay safe everyone :)

Sure why not.  But let's learn how to crawl before we run a marathon.

1. Lets get to $10k which will teach you how to get to $50k

2. $50k will teach you how to get to $100k

3. $100k will teach you how to get to $250k

4. $250k to $500k then to $1m.

Each accomplishment will teach you how long it took to get there, what skills you needed, and how much work to accomplish each level.

Lofty Goals are good and you always want shoot for the stars but tangible short term goals compounded = results. It's all about action and making it happen. Best of luck on your journey!

If you don't already have 10 million, don't even think about 100 million. Take that idea completely off the table, and focus on a smaller, more attainable goal.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have $100 million. I'd also love to be an NBA MVP, but I wouldn't make that a goal before I've even learned how to dribble the ball.

Focus first on getting your first property. Feel it out, and see if you want to continue moving forward. You might hate it, and decide to pull out entirely. That's fine, because you're still young and have time to find out what you want to do.

If you do decide that you like it, then you can gradually start building up your holdings over time. Building wealth is cool in that it starts slowly, and can ramp up exponentially over time.

For now, though, focus on getting your first house. While you're getting experience from that, aggressively save your money so you can start buying more in the future, if you decide that's what you want to do.

Focus on attainable goals. $100m is a lofty dream without a whole lot of meaning, in your current position. However, goals like 1, 2, 5, 10 units, or $50k, 100k, 200k in real estate are reasonable goals that you can achieve in the near future.

I agree with a lot of people here in this chat. Especially using SMART goals!

There is no limit to what you can do! It’s all about your attitude, determination and financial education.

Shoot for the stars! At least if you fall short, you land in the clouds.

    Best of luck!

@Robert C. Totally agree with this one. Age and time are the most important factors when it comes to appreciation and the ability to build up to that size portfolio. Grant Cardone I saw a recently over the last couple of years has built up his portfolio to 1 billion. So it’s definitely possible

@Jordan Lucas Very well put. Set high goals because even if you don’t get to the mountain top, you’re still getting a heck of a view. In terms of your goal financial freedom is simply not specific enough in my opinion. Start thinking of individual things that FI allows you to accomplish. Start thinking of why these individual things are important to you and what timeframe you would like to accomplish these things. With that in mind start looking at courses of action to attain this goal. These courses of action include most likely obstacles and how to mitigate certain risks as best as you can. Obviously education will be keys and this process will take time but if your desire is strong enough, there is no doubt that this goal is achievable. Now go out there and get after it!

I'm going to try to give an alternative to setting a particular goal but to make it dynamic.

Let's say your Goal was to do the very BEST you can do with no Net Worth in mind.

If your VERY BEST is $100 Million, FANTASTIC!

But what happens if your Very BEST is $1 Million? That's FANTASTIC too! Because it was your VERY BEST!

If you set a Monetary goal, and you did your best, and it was only $1 Million.... would you be disappointed?

Think of it this way, suppose you started out and you build a small RE Empire which winds up being worth a $1 Million.

Then, for no fault of your own, you got into a Car Accident and are no longer able to go through towards your Goal of $100 Million.

Life happened, but you did your VERY BEST. If it were me in that situation, I would still be proud of what I had accomplished, even if I could not have continued further.

So do your VERY BEST until you can't. If it's a $1 Million, fantastic! If it's $100 Million, Fantastic! If it's $1 Billion, Fantastic!

To me, all of them are equal because you did your very best.

Like your Mom would say, she loves you no matter what you accomplished as long as you did your very best!

I don’t really think the number alone tells the story. I know people who have put together $500m+ in deals. They’ve gone that route, marketed well & raised tons of capital on the backs of a great bull run. I also know of people have $50-150m in RE and they did it with their own money. Brick by brick, step by step. Not people who were born with a silver spoon either. While both are impressive, I respect the second avenue more than the syndicator/deal maker. Just personal preference. No rights or wrongs here. For most of us, me included, we’re going to need outside capital @ some point.

@Jordan Lucas Yes absolutely. Aim for $200 Million. And don’t ever give up. Your goal will be easier then. I’m serious.

@Jordan Lucas I believe this is definitely an obtainable goal. With such an ambitious goal I would highly recommend the book “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. It’s free with a Kindle Subscription or $10-$20 on Amazon.

This book helped me create a wealth focused mindset and teaches a basic psychology for developing one. If it is difficult to grasp the first time around, try reading it a few times. I personally read it 3 times before I fully understood the text.

    Good luck on your journey!

    Best,

    C. Harris

Read Grant Cardone 10x Rule, after you read that decide if 100 mil is reasonable or if your traget too low. You can do anything if you do not put limits on yourself.

I would focus on the foundation - you. Learn as much as you can, get your hands dirty in RE as soon as possible, and network with members in your local & BP community. The stronger you make the foundation, the easier you'll be plowing through each of your goals & milestones you set for yourself.

Reasonable? By most people's standards, no. But who cares about most people's standards. Shoot for the moon. Starting early, staying focused for the next 40+ years, and being aggressive will be some of the most important factors. I wouldn't worry about "rules of thumb" such as waiting to be a certain age to secure a loan. You're going to have to be creative to create that kind of wealth so get started now! Good luck and I truly hope you can do it!

Great goal! Its impressive that you're even on this site at your age. With your ambition and taking action its only a matter of time. Find a good mentor & you'll do great. What market are you in?
