Just like it says, are there any very young investors out here on bigger pockets?
One of the hardest things for me is finding someone in the same age group as I am (teenager, almost adult tho =]) who find passion in being an entrepreneur and/or investing in real estate.
If not, did anyone start out investing at a very young age? I would love to hear your stories. I can tell you it's been quite an interesting path to take starting at age 14.
Started at 19 personally, but didn't become a landlord until I was 26. The best part about starting young is you can get yourself started in a system of buying money making things before getting caught up in the trappings of feeling the need to own money costing things.
Im currently 23 with a few of my own rentals. Got my real estate license at age 18, managed 80 unit complex at 19. Moved to Texas to invest at age 20. Bought first rental at 20

Wow! These are some amazing stories. Reading this thread has refreshed my spirits.
I'm 26 and have wholesaled over 10 homes since I started about a year ago. I've picked up several rentals and am on the verge of doing my own rehabs soon.
I'm so excited about the new year and the opportunity that it brings.
Good luck to everyone in the new year.
Looks like my old thread got a sudden burst of life. Well, I'm glad to know I am not alone.
Just got back from another real estate training. Got some new ideas from the older guys long rooted in the game.
I think the best part about starting off young is the fact that you have no previous conditioning from the world to make you arrogant. I can't tell you how many people think I am crazy for doing what I do.
Read the posts by Ryan Webber. I know that he started young and he's done the right things to succeed in the business long term. As mentioned before, it's not so much when you start as much as it is "staying power." If you read Ryan's posts you can learn how to have that staying power. If you spend most of your time hanging around the "old guys" at the court house auctions and get to know some of the long-time investors who are constantly closing at the title company then you will gain invaluable knowledge in how to have success.
Hey Everyone i have been away from this forum for a bit now because i was working on my first flip. I grew up around my grandma who owned a few properties and always told me that real estate was the best industry to get into. So when i graduated high school i purchased my first property at 18.
After about a year when i was 19 i purchased my second property. Then i was convinced on looking for my first flip after about a year of looking at tons of deals i found a perfect property and purchased it. It was a success and everything went great!
I am now 22 and own and run a few companies outside of Real Estate so i stay fairly busy and i enjoy the life i live. It is awesome to see others in my generation longing for the same goals, we are the future.
I started when I was 21, working as an internship, I looked for a single owned reality company were the broker was more interested in investing than being a broker. Luck was with me, I met him at the Gym. a couple months Later, I did reserch for him for foreclosure properties, the best property I found him was a 3 unit with a bar underneath, He sold it a couple months later for a very good profit, He gave me 10 grand for the work. So i can imagine how much he made on the property. I was looking for properties to buy but that joined the army reserve and am now deployed, so I consider it time to learn everything I can.
But to me being young for outweighs being older in the business. People are more willing to help.
these are some pretty fasciniating things ive read on here, makes me acutally feel like a loser now i guess, but ive got to keep going,im glad to you that alot of you all didnt stop and let any obstacles get in your way and kept going to achieve success.......quite jealous that i didnt stay on track ...i see the best thing to do is like nike and "just do it"
congrats to all the kids on here with their successes..pretty awesome i think....and thanks to the vets for being so encouraging instead of knockin us down..i'm 23..own one single family, and now just purchased a 4 unit property recently as well...trying to keep my debt down best i can...all my friends make fun of my beat up old truck and im renting a walk-in closet in someone's house...one day i'll have a car that doens't wreak of gasoline!
man you sound like you are a very comitted individual to own a sfr and a 4 unit and renting a walk in closet....pretty soon you'll be laughing at them im sure
stephen, it's a pretty large closet...lol...i have a queen size mattress in here along with my desk for work stuff...it's not bad, and it's the cheapest way i could find to live in the downtown area...just wish it had a window, sometimes i feel like i could sleep all day without a window in this cave haha
i started investing in stock at 15-16yrs, and used those profits to buy a rental when i was 20, but my wife moved into that house, sold it at a large profit to buy our current place. Aside from that my investing has been left to mostly the stock market (i'm 27 now). Looking to get restarted in REI though.
Hello kids!
I love this thread. I was young once, not any more. I drove a chev cor____(vair!) not a corvette, Lived in a 2 bedroom apt and went into real estate. My first office as a Brokerin Placentia, CA had an unlevel floor that actually went uphill. EMBARRASSING. Not long after, I BOUGHT a 30,000 sq ft office building, and the rest is history. It can be done. It would be fun to be young in this market. I would kick some serious BUTT. Age is only a disadvantage if YOU think it is. Go get em kids. I'm here for encouragement. It can be done. Maybe you can retire in your 20's. It has been done before.... Rich
As a female, I started at age 15, doing the notebooks for Red Carpet Realty in Tucson, AZ and also cleaning my parent's landlord's office every Sunday. As a military brat, my Dad did not by a "home" to after ALL 5 of we kids were out of the nest, most of us, defending the USA and FREEDOM. Welcome to the world of real estate and a better way of life! Happy 2010! -- Dawn
Hey guys! i know this post is a little out dated, hower it was awesome!
Im 20 years old. I've got been in real estates since i was fourteen. I started interning for one of my mentors that owned a huge development firm. I would help with everything form demolition, to clean up to sheet rock to the finishing touches. At first it was very tedious and made me ffel like why am i even doing this but i will be the first to admit that the experience paid off handsomely and i was able to get my first small rehab done at the age of 19!
Just like everyone said, this is business definitely does work and will make your dreams come true!
I bought my first house at 20 and never looked back. Now in my young 30's and still considered young for what I acheived in RE. I was homeless as a child so I always wanted a house or 2 to live in!

!!. I decided to live at home with Mom to keep mym overhead low. ORiginally Iw as gonna move into the 5th basement apt but loved the thought of banking an additional 675.00 monthly.
I wish I was a bit more aggressive when I was younger just about to close on my 6th Multi family and am aggressively pursuing others investments.
Am in my late 30s now and hope to be able to retirein my 50s and livei very comfortably.
Quick question Chris and also for others, i hear alot of you guys say that you wish you were more aggressive when you were younger???? can you guys explain?
I love that this read keeps coming back. I loved that I posted in here several years ago before I had closed a single deal. I enjoy reading about how others got started.
I'm 24, started getting educated financially at 17 and RE seemed like the natural progression. I've since served in the military for 3 years and am 3 years into my Bsc in Electrical Engineering. I'm trying to divide my time between my studies and investing, what makes this even harder is that since I'm not an American, but do invest in the US and Canada since opportunities here in Israel are few, I have to tread very, very carefully. What makes it easier is that I've inherited some money and could take advantage of the current crisis and own over 20 properties, and planning to make my first big buy in the near future (in the form of an apartment building).
I am 25, I purchased my first rental unit when I was 22 and have puchased 8 units since than. I live far below my means so I can save about 4k a month to use towards future purchases. I have never paid an interest payment on a credit card or car.
20 years old and recently started learning about real estate and all its benefits. My father is in real estate and currently owns 3 rental properties which he is in the process of trying to convert to me and my 2 brothers. I find it interesting that so many people start so young and am thankful that I have recently came to this revelation of sorts. My only problem is I dont know exactly where to go from here because I've always felt I was too young. I am also enrolled at college as of right now but looking for internship or experience opportunities for this coming summer. Thanks and stay positive!
