Hello Everyone,

I have seen several posts inquiring about a meetup in San Diego and have not yet been able to find one myself. So, I thought I would put out a feeler to see how many people would be interested in starting a new meetup group for all of us in San Diego.

Even if it starts as just a few of us going to a local coffee shop to chat, exchange ideas, ask questions, etc; it would be great to have a place to get together and talk San Diego Real Estate.

Hello,

I organize a very small meet-up in Encinitas. The focus is "Buy and Hold" and the only requirement for attendance is that you currently have a rental property. We have a few guys just getting started and some doing large apartment deals out of state. I don't have speakers. It's really an opportunity to go around the table and talk about whatever the heck you want to hopefully related to real estate. That's it, and most of our turn outs are about 4-10 people. If anyone is interested and meets the one requirement above, feel free to send me a message.

Some of us did a couple meetups, beginning in May, then July, then September (about 35 people attended each!). The last one was at someone's active project so folks could see something in action and critique / offer ideas / learn from it.
@Tim G. (the mastermind earlier this year) talked about putting another one together in December, not sure where that landed. I'm guessing with the holidays, it'd be harder than usual.
If someone else wants to organize, happy to offer up our current project as a case study.

There are quite a few San Diego REI meetup groups on Meetup.com. Would the goal of this meetup be to meet the various people in San Diego from Bigger Pockets? I am just trying to determine what would make this Meetup unique to the half dozen or so San Diego REI Meetup groups and their associated Meetups.
I definitely do not have time for a meetup until next year. Holidays are always busy but I also had a long time tenant move out so the unit needs a lot of little stuff (lots of little stuff is cheaper than big stuff (rehab) but takes a lot of time). So the last couple of weeks have had my "spare" time spent on property management tasks related to finding a good tenant and getting the unit ready to rent. We only gave ourselves to Dec 4 to have it ready and we happen to have got a likely tenant for Dec 4 (so no slack time - we must finish to plan and so far my handyman has been sick 1.5 days). Hopefully by tomorrow the potential tenant will have passed our screening. So other items (decorating, cleaning, researching next vacation, etc.) have been pushed until after the unit is rented.

I am glad you found your way to this post. I was actually planning on emailing you to see if you'd be interested.
I really like the idea of using an active project as a meeting place/focus of each meeting. I know you have a number of projects going on at the moment, but I am assuming you are referring to Mohawk, correct? That would be a great property for this purpose, as I think it presents a scenario that is unfamiliar to many and also provides insight into a number of different aspects of investing.
I'd love to have a group from BP that meets regularly each month. So, if I have to take the reigns and organize it, I will happily do so.

Hey @Dan H. I have seen the meetups on meetup.com; but, I was specifically seeking a meetup comprised solely (or primarily) made up of local BP members. (likely more actively investing, have at least a base knowledge of how the numbers work and likely have at least an intermediate level understanding of a Real Estate Deal)
I am sorry to hear about your tenant/handyman issues. It sounds like you have a solid plan, which is half the battle of getting the property rented on time. Let me know if you need a good handyman, I have a few great ones I work with pretty regularly.
It sounds like everyone is saying after the holidays is best, would the week of January 4th-10th work for you? I know that qualifies as next "year", but I'm certainly not giving you much leeway lol. Let me know!

This sounds like a great idea! It would provide a different perspective than sitting in a room of people and lecturing about REI. I'm more of a visual/hands-on learner, so I could benefit. I would only be available weekends or after 5 on weekdays. Still got the 9-5 to pay the bills for now.

Hey Kevin,
Great to see more motivation on this. We've done three BP meetups this year in San Diego with pretty good attendance. We should talk, had plans for a Dec meetup but with the holidays its been a challenge to pick a date.
I'm planning for one in early January to kick things off at a project here in San Diego. Hoping to use Justin's latest if he's still down for it!

Great Idea - I just started one up here in the central valley - ours is different from the other's as it is supposed to have weekly meetups as well as go through live deals (on paper) and discuss them - The idea of holding meetings on site of an existing project has come up more than once and I think it is a great idea and something we will probably do periodically - though not each week. Also - though it is supposed be weekly - starting it up just before the holidays might have been a little too soon - combine that with the fact that the place I want to hold the meetings regularly is actually under construction until after the holidays - so we have met in a restaurants so far- but i am looking forward to getting us into a business center more geared for meetings. Restaurants can be great for getting together if it's a large group - but all the fuss with taking orders , bringing food, drinks coming and going .. it's all a lot of distraction - I would like to meet at a coffee shop but the group is too big and we would overtake the whole place - meeting at a live deal is great on so many levels... especially if you have several of them available to visit. Good luck with your group - sounds like the responses to it are already positive.
