Remote Lock: Doorknob handle or deadbolt?

Question

I would like to hear others' thoughts on where to install the remote lock. Here are my thoughts.

DEADBOLT: I like the idea of the deadbolt, it is just more secure.

DOORKNOB HANDLE: I like the door handle remote because I'm worried someone could lock the doorknob from the inside and shut the door from the outside if it is not the remote lock. Now they don't have a key or code to unlock the doorknob. With a key-only deadbolt, they can not lock it unless they are inside, so they can't lock themselves out.

Hey Tim

We use a Schlage Encode deadbolt with Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries. I also use dielectric grease on the battery connections to prevent corrosion. We have a lockbox with a key for backup in case the electrical part malfunctions. Hope this helps.

We use the Schlage encode and then out a dummy door handle on so guests can’t lock themselves out

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think of the nonlocking handle. I wonder if the guests will feel more secure if there is a deadbolt they can lock while they are there. I would leave the key to the deadbolt with the condo association.

Hey @Tim Cooper, we also use the Schlage Encode dead bolt and a simple doorknob with no lock.

I also have a lock box nearby with the deadbolt key as well as keys for the other deadbolts that are not electronic.

One option is to use a smart lock for the deadbolt and a non-locking handle, and then keep a spare key in a lockbox outside so you can let someone in remotely if the smart lock fails for some reason.
