I discovered BP after my friend and I attended a local REI group for the first time. As novice investors, we didn't know what to expect; and, interestingly, they had a guru and her husband using a hard sell on their program to "get rich with wholesaling". We would have left early, but they were insulting and threatening anyone who left the presentation. Needless to say, we were very confused after it was over. Thankfully, I started doing some online research and found BP. I read an article where Brandon issued warnings about gurus. Thank you for saving me a great deal of money, Brandon! I would like to start out with a small multi-family unit. Ideally, something that would be a good "value-added" opportunity. Thanks so much for the valuable information that you provide!

Hey Kim,

I would be curious about the specifics of the guru you are describing. I attend the AIA meetings in Birmingham which is the local REIA as much as I can. There are good and bad people there. There are some local "gurus" who are worth getting to know. At any rate I have been investing in the Birmingham area for about 5 years. I don't know everything, but I have a good idea of what to do and not to do. If you have any questions I am happy to help. I am going to try to put together a Bigger Pockets event where some of us can meet up and talk about what we are doing. We all need each other. We all want to succeed and make money , and we need to network to do that. Take care.

Same here. I had some things come up that I couldn't move around and ended up missing as well. From anyone who went, how was the meeting? How was the attendance?

How did the meeting go? Will there be another this month?

Tuesdays and Wednesdays dont work for me, but I would like to hear how it went. Maybe a new goal for the group could be taking notes or minutes of the meeting and posting it here. That might be a little ambitious...

Is there another post on BP where the Bham investors are communicating?

    Hi Frank,

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make it either. Jimmy said that they had a good turnout. I hope there is another meeting soon and will post details here. I'm not sure if there is another place that Bham investors are communicating.

    Hello,
My wife and I would also like to meet up with some local investors. We are currently in the beginning stages of investing. We're about to start a year long class with a local investor to teach us the ropes. We've been in the game for about a year now and i've seen some great deals mainly in Clay Co, Centerpoint and Huffman/Pension areas. I've made many offers and i even had an accepted offer but was nervous about whether or not i was making the right move. Finally after seeing a friend of mine's success after taking this class i decided to bite the bullet and spend the money. My wife and i are interested in rentals but also doing a few flips to pay for the rentals in cash. I'm looking forward to meeting as many investors as i can. I would like to see how other investors in birmingham are doing and what areas are doing well. I've been a little nervous about areas where i've found many deals.

    Hello Jon H.

Thanks for posting! I am interested to know what class that you and your wife are taking. Is it through the Hoover Public Library by chance? I took a free property management online course that was very good. I'm not sure when the next meet-up will be, but I've been thinking about it now that the holidays are behind us.

    Happy 2014!

    Hey Kimberly,
Its a year long course through CreativeRealEstateMentor.com
Walter and His wife Peggy live here in Birmingham and teach a year long class that covers everything a real estate investor would need to know on all different subjects. He provides on site training as well. They also partner with you on your first 4 deals so you don't mess up. If you go to his site look for the Coaching Student Program. It will tell you all about it.
I was skeptical at first but I had a friend take the course last year and he's already made twice my salary working part-time. I also found everytime i would look at a property i would call him and get his and Walters advise. Finally my wife and I decided instead of jumping into a property we would take Walters Class and make sure we started our business off right. Good luck in your ventures.

Kimberly, is everyone meeting separately from BP or meeting up with the local group I believe called AIA?

    Hi Nancy,

I enjoyed the meeting with Birmingham Meetup. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to attend many meetings. It is different than AIA which was my first experience. I've heard that AIA is hit or miss and could still beneficial. Good Luck to you!
