dang... from the sounds of it, Im gonna have to try this in and out burger... funny thing, Ive never even heard of an In and Out burger... Probably because I live in Kentucky.
I really like the burgers too. I go to Cali about once a year, and have them everytime. My friends suggest steak houses and fine dining restaurants, but I have to fill one evening with a HUGE In and Out meal.
BTW - We've got a great burger chain here in Colorado called Smashburger. The food is AWESOME!
It isn't quite In'nOut, but it is the next best "fast" burger joint I've ever been to - AND - they are currently franchising. Check them out at http://www.mysmashburger.com/
Matty,
I can't get down to Burbank from my house due to the fire. This sucks. All freeways and roads leading from my home in Santa Clarita to Sylmar and through are shut down.
Let Tim know the situation as to why I can not get down, unless things change in the next few hours.
Feel free to call me while you are there.
Will B
I am up the 14 on the North East side of Santa Clarita. I can see the smoke and some flames from my backyard on the mountain top to the south, but it is miles and miles from our home. Thank you for your thoughts.
I am soo bummed as I was looking forward to meeting Tim in person, not to mention grubbing on some tasty burgers.
Guess I will have to go to the one down the street from me for that.
Call me from your cell when you are there, perhaps you can place me on speaker and we can talk while you guys are there. I will aslos miss out on kicking butt at Cash Flow. What a bummer!
OK, now the fire is in the mountains above Santa Clarita. This sucks. Just when we thought we escaped the danger this year, and it caused me to miss the in & out burger fest with my fellow investors.
Matty,
Great to meet you in person man! The burgers were just as good as I remember them. I did check out The Grove afterwards and it was pretty cool. I'll do some further research into what we talked about re. Pepperdine. I got to thinking about our discussion on how real estate really isn't retail per se.... Structuring a rental in that pre-packaged soup to nuts manner does in a sense make it retail.....
Will,
I'm sorry to hear you got stuck in that. I could see the smoke from my hotel room this morning. Glad to hear you and yours are safe. That is most important. Regardless I'm going to pm you my cell. I'm hanging around in town till tuesday. I'm sure we could find a chance to grab lunch or coffee - have to hit Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf before I go.
Hey Josh,
Quick report on this. With the fires and all it ended up being just Matty and I and a friend I brought along so we didn't play cashflow or take photos cause there really wasn't much to shoot. We just sat around and talked.
One thing we talked about related to a recent thread about how to make money in real esate in LA county. It simply doesn't work from a standard rental perspective so we discussed other options and as an outside observer from the air and the ground, LA county looked to me like a gigantic mall with houses mixed in. This is a retail consumer market here the likes of which I've seen nowhere else except maybe New York. Maybe the cashflow to be had here is in consumer retail business. I think to my shuttle service that took me to my hotel. A team of vans, drivers, coordinators, cb radios and a dispather are churning cashflow for someone who set up that business. Let's say conservatively it took half a million in startup costs to get that thing going - I am certain beyond a shadow of a doubt that this business cashflows more than any half million dollars worth of real estate here. The market here does not support cashflowing real estate but the density of people certainly must support cashflowing businesses to keep them moving around, fed, clothed and entertained.
I got to thinking about something you said Matty about businesses vs. real estate and real estate building equity while businesses don't. I had to think about this but I think this is a perspective of the consumer based real estate you have in California. Businesses don't build "equity" the way that consumer driven real estate does. Businesses build value relative to their cashflow - and you can sell that value and get loans against it just like real estate. The truth in areas that do cashflow is that the value of commercial real estate is based on it's cashflow as well and when I package more than 5 of my houses together for financing, it's a commercial loan where valuation is based on cashflow.
Anyway for a first of it's kind meeting, it was great. I'll definitely be down for this again next time I fly out here. If we can get more, I'll snap some shots then. Who knows, maybe we can get some of the local hotties to get in the photo too so you can use that for the marketing - Join Bigger Pockets and meet women!!! ;-) Take it easy.
Tim,
Send me that PM and I will call you. The freeway is still closed on my side as the fire has gotten much closer to us. Hopefully tomorrow will bring a better result.
Hey Tim Great to meet you, too!
From real estate, to business ideas, to guns and hunting...I enjoyed all our conversations. I am definitely down for meeting up again next time you fly out. I actually ended up at the Grove later that night, to see the new James Bond movie.
The air quality is horrible today from the fires, even by the beach. I too hope anyone living near fire terrain comes out of this unscathed.
Drop me a line when you make that midwest trip. We can hit the range so you can try out a few toys that California won't let you have.

That would be cool. But I will need a tutorial. I haven't picked up one of those since summer camp/5th grade.
Gents how could you forget to invite a lady this pretty to our meeting? Oh man.... Don't worry Rosie. I'll personally make sure you get a good dose of midwestern chivalry next time I'm in town. ;-)
