Home Depot "Pro Xtra" account tracks all your purchases

Where has this been my whole life!! They keep an online record of all your purchases and email you receipts with your job number on it.  No more wondering where are all those receipts if you get audited. The data can be exported to a spreadsheet. You can use any card or cards, doesn't have to be their credit. Amazing.

I love the export to Excel feature, especially if you have multiple jobs and use multiple cards.  Here's why (and apologies if this is too Excel geeky):

If you do your own bookkeeping in something like QB, and can't easily import transactions, then entering them individually is a pain - especially with multiple cards/jobs, and if you want to track your expenditures at a more detailed level like Drywall, HVAC, framing, etc.

Dumping the transactions to Excel allows you to pivot the data by data elements like Month, Job, Department, so that you can generate a summarized journal entry which can then be entered into QB once - you just need to keep the detailed data somewhere accessible for backup.

Example:

If I pivot my home depot detailed data for March 2015 I see that I had expenditures for one job for the following departments:

BLDG. MATERIALS
ELECTRICAL
HARDWARE
KIT/BATH
LUMBER
MILLWORK
PLUMBING
WALL&FLOOR COVER.
WINDOW/WALL

It's pretty easy to map these to however I track expenditure in my WIP accounts in QB and then enter a single journal entry for March that balances the total charged to the card against individual items for each of the above.  No one really cares that I visited Home Deport 8 times to pickup lumber, and twice more to pickup both lumber and fasteners.  From a bookkeeping standpoint I just need to know that for job XYZ I spent $456.23 on lumber, and that it is tracked correctly as a rehab expenditure for that job.

The only issue I have with the Excel data is that the summary file contains the Job Name and Card Used - you will need to pull that into the detailed file before pivoting.

    @Johann Jells Yes- pro extras is a beautiful thing! Also if your orders are over a certain amount (depends on location) I hope they're sending them to the bid room for you for extra discounts.

    I at HD every other day. I hope it's easy to setup and I do not have to go through the pro desk every time I wish to makes purchase. I will be checking on this tomorrow. Thank you so much for that info. Frank

    @Account Closed If you're making small purchases and have the pro account set up it should recognize your card at the traditional checkout counter and you'll punch in your telephone number. Should ask for a job name and will be tracked as well.

    Also you use to get 5% off in our area automatically if you have a commercial card. Now you have to ask for it but they still have to honor it. Which is crap and every receipt i mention this is the comments. That i should not have to beg for it. If you go to Lowes you get 5% automatically.

    @Chris Sukala, in the Austin area I think HD used to say you could get 5% off for using your HD credit card, but only if you ask for the discount -- begging for it, as you put it. I never did like that on routine small purchases, because the cashiers did not all seem to know about it and it always made me wonder if the cashiers would think I was being cheap and causing them trouble. Recently, though, an HD guy in Fort Collins, CO, told me the 5% is now only on paint. I've never understood the mysterious distinction between regular rewards and paint rewards. Can you clarify?

    The Austin area HD's give the discount if you use an HD credit card.  Lately you do not have to ask for the discount.

    While you might have to be a member of a local REI group that is a member of the National one, the Pro Xtra Loyalty program offers a 2% rebate on your Home Depot purchases*, an appliance program, and 20% off on paints. As well, in case you're not aware, should you have a larger order of sorts, take the order to the ProDesk and ask for special/discounted pricing. The clerk should submit the request and you may very well save a few bucks just for asking.

    *Tip: Rebate program is based upon purchases made with pre-registered credit/debit/gift cards, so if you have others make purchases for you (or give your subs gift cards), considering buying gift cards, register them and earn the rebate.

    HD stopped giving the 5% discount in our area about a year ago. Instead they have moved to gas rewards which is pretty useless to us as there are too many restrictions on using it and the gas price isn't that competitive. We can get a decent discount and free shipping when the orders are big enough by going through the pro desk but for small orders it makes more sense just to go to Lowe's as they give you the discount automatically.

    As to Lowes, I do not see where you can see your receipts. But there is a way you can download the statements in summary. Whereas, a Home Depot Pro member you can do see details and track purchases. Here is a HUB where you can find all the answers to your questions in one place.

    Lowes has that ability to show all statements as well. I wondered this myself when I was returning an item and found they actually had all my purchases, which made it easier to find just when I bought that item.

     But do they give you access to that data online?  Most companies have this stuff for their own use. I get a chuckle from BJ's club pretending they only keep it in-store for 2 weeks after purchase, after that you need the receipt. Crappy Costco wannabees.

     Yes, I logged into my account and there they were, all my purchases. I was criticizing the app because I thought why do they have this if I am not able to see my purchases. I thought it was just a rewards thing but in fact it actually does show all the purchases.

    We have sams club here and they list all my purchasing in the app as well. Love that it allows me to scan and checkout directly without going to a register.

    Home Depot Pro does really track all the purchases that is super convenient in many ways like returns, job costing or accounting. Also it saves all your purchase data and emails the receipts. Tracking the expenses at Home Depot can be done basically with few simple steps you can follow here.
