I'm trying to scale up my mailing campaign drastically...is there a way around purchasing books of stamps for the going rate? or is the cost per stamp something I just need to get use to spending?
The PO has rolled stamp in quantities of 500, 3000 and 10,000 which will cost you .10 or .25 cents depending on the mailing option chose. Standard or First Class. Stay away from the 500 rolls as they require moisture.
Before you buy the stamps set up with your bulk mail PO for a permit.
Once set up have the PO explain the packaging requirements. Fairly easy unless youre trying to use bar codes however on YellowLetters you wouldn't want to.
When you deliver the mail to the bulk unit at the PO they then will collect the difference between the .10/.25 cents you paid and the cost of the bulk postage. Youll be buying the stamps for as little as .31 cents.
As for the comments of handwritten or automation. That was bad advice. However at times we have to teach the PO the rules which guide them.
Getting back to the stamps.
Standard is a much slower delivery then is First Class and it does not guarantee a return of undeliverables.
So your prospect group and your desire to have the "Bad" addresses returned will dictate your choice.
Keep in mind that the difference in cost of the stamps is considerable and more mail on the ground typically wins so Standard Stamps typically out perform First Class due to their reach for the investment.
That said if I were marketing to TS or Vacants I would only choose First Class.
As for the application of stamps, if youre planning on affixing thousands of them you will want to buy a stamping machine that affixes the stamps to the envelope. Those machines can be expensive however time savers.
Heck then there is the addressing machines and printers. Heck I spent 90,000 on the printer that prints our yellow letters and I have a few of them... The work horse envelope printer cost more then a car... Stupid expensive.
