Hello from Humboldt County: Rentals, Real Estate, and Community

Hi everyone! I’m Tai, a Humboldt County native who recently returned home after more than a decade in Portland, Oregon.

I originally left Humboldt to attend school in Santa Barbara and then San Luis Obispo. While living in Portland, my work in commercial and multifamily real estate sparked a genuine passion for rental housing and real estate investing. I came to believe that well-operated rental properties can create lasting value for investors, residents, and communities.

Today, I work in business development for a local property management company, where I spend a lot of time talking with property owners and learning what makes rental investments successful over the long term.

I joined BiggerPockets to learn, exchange ideas, and build genuine relationships with thoughtful investors. I’m especially interested in multifamily properties, long-term rentals, smaller real estate markets, and the factors investors consider when evaluating an unfamiliar area.

Humboldt is a special place, with the redwoods, rivers, coastline, strong local character, and tremendous potential for thoughtful growth. I’m excited to be home and to become more involved in its real estate community.

For those of you who invest in smaller markets or purchase property from a distance: What do you want to understand first before seriously considering a new market?

I’d love to connect with Northern California investors, multifamily owners, and anyone curious about Humboldt County. If you’re local or passing through, I’m always happy to meet for coffee!

@Tai Massion Hi Tai, welcome back to Humboldt! It’s great to see someone passionate about helping investors grow in smaller markets. I work with real estate investors and property owners to help with financing for acquisitions, refinances, and investment properties. If you or anyone in your network ever needs lending options, I’d be happy to be a resource. Let’s connect!

Thanks, @Brad Seid I appreciate it! I’m focused on helping investors and property owners here in Humboldt County with property management, so there could definitely be some good overlap. I’d be happy to connect and keep you in mind when someone needs financing.

@Tai Massion, when I’m looking at an unfamiliar market, one of the first things I want to understand is what owning a property there will actually look like after the purchase. The numbers may get my attention, but I also want to know how landlord friendly or complicated the market is to operate in, who I can rely on locally, and what issues tend to come up with properties in that area.

From the legal side, I’ve worked with investors where the purchase itself wasn’t necessarily the difficult part. Questions around title, leases, tenants, property condition, or local requirements became much more important once they were actually responsible for the property. That’s why I really value having good local people who know the market beyond what you can see in a spreadsheet.

I like your perspective on smaller markets, @Tai Massion, especially coming from the property management side. I’m a real estate attorney and investor in Maryland, and I always find it useful to hear what people on the ground are seeing in their own markets. Happy to stay connected and exchange perspectives.
