If you have internet connection onsite the meter has 5 year battery and you can read it remotely.The old versions basically had an outside meter in a lock box in parallel with the water line.  

Batteries last about 6 months. 

For example in the Reno, NV area there has been a big push for diversification beyond hospitality and now Tesla is building battery packs and the new Semi Truck.

If I could find a way to run A/C in the summer off batteries that's be year round.
