Just paid $4000 for 3day workshop. Thumbs up or down?

Investor · Houston, TX · Member since 2020 · 79 posts · 78 votes

I don’t want to name drop but I paid $4000 for a 3 day workshop and now they want $40,000 more for coaching and mentorship. A friend of mine that has a successful portfolio worth millions advised me not to. He recommend to network as much as possible, study and research and start small and scale up. Your biggest investment is yourself so decided to check out bigger pockets to start my journey.

So curious to see who else has gone through those 3 day workshops in hotel conference rooms and try to sell you more and more things. Or who else has made it without shelling out 80,000 dollars for coaching and mentorship?

Please advise.

I'm confused, are you saying you paid the $4000 or are u implying that someone else did? And I'd advise against the $40,000 coaching because that is literally a downpayment on a house. Network and learn what to do from people a little more experienced at a fraction of the cost (coffee, dinner, lunch etc.) and use the $40,000 to invest in Real estate yourself.

    @Corey Bashaw that is the plan going forward. Still wish I could save more people from falling for the same sales pitch. 😟

    @ James Hamling

    Agree with Mr. Hamling's comments. I met Robert and Kim Kiyosaki right after he self published Rich Dad Poor Dad. I believe that if you read RDPD, Cash Flow Quadrant, and Rich Dad's Guide to Investing you will learn the basic mindset you need. You can get the specific strategies you need here on BP.

    @Ronan Donnelly

    May I ask what you consider difficult concepts?

    This could be the $4000 training for me. I know a lot but I don't know what I don't know. That's the scary part especially raising funds through private lending.

    Jeremiah,

    Fortune Builders! I bet you lunch!

    I did the free class. Bought the 3-day meeting before they say you are qualified for the 40k meetings! I qualified, but am broke! HA! I WIN!

    In 2008 I bought the whole Charlton Sheets course as I was convalescing from major surgeries.

    I got the course, started the reading, and my wife had a stroke!

    You know, these guys would not stop calling me for phone meetings, even when I told them my wife was in the hospital? the nerve!

    Wife is getting better, and since we moved a few times, the course was lost and forgotten.

    6 months or so ago I heard about the Than Merrill seminar again. It was free. So I went.

    It didn't seem as campy as I expected it to be, but you KNEW there was a sell coming. At the end, I figured I would know know the whole story unless I spent my $300 for my 3-day seminar. I wanted to know for myself. So, I attended it, and slept in my car because I didn't HAVE hotel money!

    I was impressed with how MY 3-day class went. No books and tables on the table. All the time, we were told that all of the information presented, was available online for free, and that this was NOT a get rich Quick thing! I thought that THAT was nice!

    I don't feel I was ripped off, as I think it was at this event where I found that I was the Poor Dad. ( in reference to Rich Dad - Poor Dad )

    I am glad I didn't have the credit or cash. I might have bitten. However, I was given the names of a few books to read, and wished well in my ways. What I got out of MY 3-day class, was that these people had systems for sale. These are systems that are up to date, and potentially ready to use in my market with just a few tweaks. I think that was fair.

    What I didn't know, because I didn't even care to look, is that there are a vast number of people out there on the net and YouTube giving away some advice and then selling things to help a guy out!

    Tools cost money? Yes they do!

    I am a carpenter. I am a former service Marine in the Marine Air Wings.

    As a beginner in both jobs, I was taught how to do things with the most basic tools. As I was able, I bought better tools to speed up my work and help my job go faster and better. Nothing there was free, and I don't expect anything in the real estate business is free.

    BP, Max Maxwell, and others give away free advice and encouragement, the same as I would as I replace the front door of your house, or fix that shed you bough from Home Depot that should have been built in a day. But, Though I will show you my special tools and land some to you for a few times, it's up to YOU to decide to buy them for yourself if you want to play like the big boys!

    One part of me wishes I had the money to see if everything was a good as presented. Then again, I took from them what I could, and am happy to learn more every day!

    If you spend the money, would you please message me what you got for it?  Just curious!

    @Jeremiah Akindele Ha, you're welcome to come to Temple anytime! I'm happy to be your BP mama! And I'm sure your wife is a very smart and beautiful woman:) You know how independent we Texans can be. I just don't want to see anyone cheated out of their hard-earned money. You seem like the kind of young man who has all of the resources he needs to succeed: drive, intelligence, work ethic, communication skills, a willingness to ask questions and learn. Read, study, observe, go meet people, practice some deals, even make some mistakes-the best way to learn...you're going to do great!

    @Jeremiah Akindele

    Let me guess... RE Mentors 😒? Yeah, no. My husband and I attended a night’s conference at The Sawgrass resort in Ponte Vedra, FL. We were doing reviews as we sat in the conference and saw the information about the up sell of the program which is major crazy ( in my opinion) to do so. Join your local RE networking groups; get a mentor; work hands on for a company...get paid for them to train you. And like many others have said, if you’ve got 50k to put in that program, it’s be better off spent investing it into 1 or 2 properties to start. Substitute Bigger Pockets for Facebook scroll time. (Blogs, podcasts, YouTube videos etc). Spend $12 to $25 here and there and read the recommended books.

    Best of luck to you as I am a beginner here as well. We’re definitely on to something!

    @Daniel Smyth first of all thanks for your service. 👍🏽 and i did fortune builders first but that wasn’t the one I am referring too. The one that got me for 4 grand was RE MENTOR with DAve Lindahl. They must be good at what they do because a few people “the chosen ones” went to the back to sign up for the advanced classes and training. Funniest part is that an older sweetest lady that attended the inference but had multiple properties didn’t even return for day 2. I guess she figured out that she could put that 40k towards another property. Lol.

    @Charity Weston. Thanks Charity and yup it was RE MENTOR. Lol. I didn’t fall for Than Merrill’s Fortune Builders 2 years ago. But RE Mentor almost got me. Wish I knew then what I know now, I would be 4000 dolllars richer.

    As a matter of fact, I was just told that some of these hotel conferences plant their own people in the audience as part of the “chosen ones” and when you see them getting up to go sign up in the back, it gives you a sense of urgency that it must be right if others are doing it.

    @Jeremiah Akindele

    I paid 2k for training with Rich Dad Poor dad program last year. They gave me good tips and advice.. then tried to upsell me for mentorship for almost exact same amount. They did a great job getting me started but for 40k I can use that as down payment for a nice property invesent. You are your greatest asset in learning and there is plenty of people on YouTube and BiggerPockets who provide you with the same info at no cost.

    @Jeremiah Akindele. That’s way too much money hat could have been spent investing.

    Books cost 10 bucks and have all the same info, and you can keep them as a reference and use them over and over.

    $400 spent on books and you will have all the info you will ever need. It’s all about experience and networking after that

    @Mitch Messer excellent advice right there. There are good ways to spend money on education and sub-optimal ways. Get the basics with no cost networking, going to REI clubs, read, watch, learn. If you can find some weekend classes offered for under $100 through your REI club that doesn't focus on upselling, check those out. But so much free education just here on BP. Once you find your niche into investing, find folks to help you out and learn from them. Only when things get more sophisticated and you have started to leant what you don't know, paying to learn how to move forward may make sense. But not when you're at 0.
