BP brothers and sisters, I quit the last job I will ever have today to focus on RE investing. In 2003, while working in corporate America someone suggested Rich Dad Poor Dad to me. Eleven years and 28 properties later I'm finished with the rat race; I'm 50. I wanted to share this with the BP community because none of my working friends want to hear it.
Agree with @Chris Simmons You should expand on the story. It's been inspiring to watch and I'm sure others would appreciate it as well.
@Brandon Turner, although I am admittedly biased, I have been wanting to nominate my dad as a podcast candidate for some time. I can't think of a better 50th birthday and retirement present. Hilarious, down to earth, and sharp guy with a great story and unusual business model!
Love it! I quit my job 15 years ago and have not missed it one bit. I golf, play a lot of softball, run most days, walk my dogs, do some real estate projects.... stuff like that. It has not all been peaches and cream. The mega downturn hit me like a bat to the head. But, I recovered well enough.
Life is meant to be lived on your terms. You go!!!
Congratulations and thank you for sharing your success! You're inspiring many others to do the same and follow the plan of 'slow and steady wins the race'. Great to hear you had a plan, stuck to it, and executed it consistently.
You've made the shift to the "I" quadrant, while your working friends wish to stay in the "E" or "S" quadrants
Congratulations! @Glenn McCrorey . Enjoy, plan to do everything you wanted to do and couldnt due to work hours. When I get to the point you are at, I pledge to dedicate some regular time to others who want to get there :).
Congrats now the real work begins...!! I don't know about others but I have never worked I started in RE at 18 and have been doing it ever since and I am 58...
Like @Steve Olafson I have had my ups and downs but more ups than downs.. I just look at it as a lifestyle.. Never as a job.
But this lifestyle can become all consuming.. And when its good its great when it sucks, you then wonder why the hell you did this and why you did not just get a corporate job and have all that security.. LOL.
Best of luck to you.. last 4 years have been some great times for all to jump in.. I think reader needs to remember that these were very rare and special times were you could buy assets so low with such high rents... We are seeing now how people are pulling back saying they are going to coast for a while etc etc..
So one needs to remember what you did in the past may not be quite as lucrative in the future vis a vi cash flow buy and hold... Flipping and value add works in any market conditions at least for me is does. And or if the metrics are still there in your market now then by all means load up...
We just have 5 units. I'm at the point where I could quit, but we'd be really just squeaking by. <Jealous!> Looking forward to getting to the the point where you are, and figuring out how many units that might be. What I want is a secure part-time job. Enough of this full-time!
And looking forward to hearing more of your story.
