Americans Are Ditching These Five States In Record Numbers

Apparently surging violent crime, massive tax hikes and insolvent public pensions are bad for attracting new residents...who knew? On the other hand, 364 days of sunshine per year, minimal crime, brand new infrastructure and some of the lowest tax rates in the country seems to be, to our complete shock, somewhat appealing to folks looking to relocate.

But that is just a couple of many interesting takeaways to be gleaned from the latest annual "U.S. Migration Report" from North American Moving Services which found that Illinois was the most ditched state in 2017.

this has been going on for decades.. Oregon is the number one in migration of CA residents.. I is one.

but I is not going to go to NV  were there is not state income tax.  LOL.

and people have been leaving the northern cold states for warm states in a reverse migration for the last 40 years as well..

CA will be just fine.. you cannot have all the jobs and economy there and the best weather literally in the world.. and some of the finest young minds in the world.. just not going to fall off a cliff for all those that leave you have others coming in to replace.

    No offense to those that live in the outbound states, but I’m not sure if you could pay me enough to live in most of them.

    The data set is kind of less useful it should be. Without reading links, technically any state could be #1 on in AND out. Say a state has 100M population, 70M goes out and 70M goes in on a year, this data will make them #1 on both, now taking the same example, a 1M population state and 700k people moving in and out could have the same effect. Impossible data conclusion.

    Just what exactly are the percentages supposed to refer to? Just looks like random data on a map to draw attention. Anyone who has been on I880 knows the population has been increasing steadily.

    This is not just for Liz, but since she asked about New York.....

    Like everything in Real Estate, a lot can be boiled down to a specific location.

    New York State might be among the top OUT Bound States.... but NYC is still projected to grow another 800k more in population.

    The Statistics of just IN/Out bound migration of people can e VERY misleading.

    Obviously, if NYC has a population of 8.2 Million, let's say 5% of the people leave, but 10% of the people have at least ONE child per Adult........ the NET population still grows significantly.

    All Real Estate Investors know that the most immediate factor in your success starts from:

    1) The dynamics of your Investment

    2) The Block that it's on (if this is a dense city)

    3) The Neighborhood

    4) The City

    5) The MSA

    6) The State

    7) The Nation and lastly

    8) The World Economy

    The report is based upon 7) The Nation and how people are migrating. There are still 1-6 MORE important factors to consider before you get to 7).

    The census bureau shows CA had the 3rd largest population increase in 2017.  This population increase is to a state that already has housing shortages in the San Fran area and coastal So Cal.  If it was not for people leaving, the population would have increased more and the housing shortage would be even greater.

    Not everyone will be able to afford to live here (or other expensive states) and the best decision for those people may be to move elsewhere.  I understand the decision and wish them the best.

    So far for everyone that has left CA there has been more than one moving to CA.  That is why the population of the state continues to increase.

    The lesson, be careful of what the numbers really are indicating.  A lot of people leaving in the case of CA does not imply that the state population is decreasing (CA population is still increasing in greater numbers than all but 2 states).

    If I were not a landlord I would be all for many people leaving the county that I live. FWIW my belief is the county would be a nicer place to live with less people. First, there would be enough housing; recently (in the last few days) there was a fire in a SFR that had 20 residents (mostly children).

    I went tide pooling on New Years, -2 tide.  The line of cars to get to the tide pools was significant enough to close the road to the tide pools.  Similar too many people for local snow (in the local mountains), desert wild flowers, etc.  You can literally head to the mountains to play in the snow and spend hours in traffic.  Hopefully this is scaring off some potential immigrants to CA :=).
