I want to live in the mountains: help please :)

My family is growing and as we grow in size we also grow tired of the mundane life of the plains.  There is a lot to appreciate other than natural beauty, but as native Natural Staters we love us some outdoors.  Particularly we are drawn to mountains and love skiing, hiking, camping, and the like.

What mountain town or town with easy access to mountains would you recommend for an outdoor-experiences-fueled lifestyle?  

Potential for investments doesn't hurt, but it's not required :)

An underrated gem could be Reno, NV! Sits right at the base of the Sierra's, close to Lake Tahoe, 0% state income tax and relatively cheap real estate with opportunities for CF and appreciation.

    Thanks for fleshing this out Nicko!  I'm sorry to hear about this evolution in the town and I'm thankful to understand it better.  I've heard of some municipalities imposing tiered property taxes on these darn-near-abandoned luxury homes in order to promote people who actually live in the town and I hope Telluride implements some smart things like that to equalize this trend

    @Jay Hinrichs what are someplace you like in BC? Maybe it's to hard to narrow it down!?

    BC is HUGE place almost as big as CA  OR WA  ID NV put together. 

    for me I like the Kamloops plauteu for still water fishing.. I like Vancouver island.

    I like Revelstoke for skiing and so on and so forth..

    I was up there a few years ago  when i flew in  to check out a gold mining thing out of Quensel   was super impressed with the scale and scope of the logging / mill operations there..  dwarfs anything state side these days.   fine dinning we did not find much..

    the gold thing was a farce.. the guy that drug me up there turned out to be a wack job..
