New Landlords - Are you prepared for the hate?

New Landlords - Are you prepared for the hate?

Being a landlord or real estate investor is tough. Not everyone is going to see things the same way you do. Things like evictions or rent increases are very sensitive subjects. Many people in our society want to vilify landlords for doing their jobs.

  • Have you considered this as you begin or continue to grow your investment portfolio?

Below is a recent comment someone sent me on YouTube. Admittedly I operate in the public eye a lot more than your typical landlord or real estate investor so I'll receive a higher amount of this type of stuff then most but most if not all landlords or investors are going to face this type of stuff everyday. If they build a high profile business like I have it can get extreme like the comment you see below.

  • What are your thoughts on how society views landlords or real estate investors?
  • Have you experienced any hate like this because you choose to invest or manage real estate?

@James Wise don't let them get to you. They are jealous of your success. I am dealing with two Haters right now, both of whom don't have a pot to piss in. I am in the pricess of evicting one of them (a welfare tenant with six kids and no husband). Hang in there....not all residential tenants are like that.

    @James Wise

Those are pretty harsh words coming from the president's impostor (I hope).  I don't think landlords in general are considered that negatively in society as a whole, but if I grew my business to your level, it's possible I would amend my opinion. It does seem as though those lower on the socioeconomic scale might have more resentment toward a landlord than more wealthy tenants. Anyone can have a dispute over material facts, but ingrained resentment just by virtue of having to pay rent is a different matter.

@James Wise Man, that is some serious “shade”... and pretty harsh. But in the words of Katt Williams “You ain’t doing things right - unless you have haters”.

@ moderator who removed my post... guess you didn't want to hear any comments describing the 'special' kind of hate reserved for female landlords ... I thought it was timely ... I did notice that all the likes on the post were from women. Sad.

Haters are gonna hate... and they sound especially stupid when there's spewing it from a completely ignorant standpoint.

As my favorite drill sergeant (Sergeant First Class Taylor) from basic training would say to a person like that..."Shut your mouth you worthless Turd a#%hole" lol

I believe it's going to depend on who you have as a renter and how you are as a landlord.  If your not taking care of your property as described in the contract then I believe you might deserve the dislike.  But make the criteria clear in the beginning and do a thorough background on your tenants, I believe you'll be fine

That’s why I keep a low profile brother. When I started I’d meet all my tenants. Do my own leases. Respond to emails. Etc.

Now? No way. I’m older. Have kids. I keep my name out of it. As far as my tenants know my operations manager is “the man”.

Hell I don’t even use my full name or company name on this site. Never really saw a reason to push my name as the brand.

My main dealings are just with brokers. Other owners. My lenders. Etc.

Don't get me wrong I get the venting. We just had a $57,000 flood by a resident we had to evict. I just don't think you can be super surprised when they vent back.

@James Wise I’m with @Dennis M. on this one. Call me whatever you want I could care less as long as you pay the rent. Well, pay the rent and not destroy my property I will say this though. YouTube comments may be the worst place on the web for ignorant Trolls.

Are you sure it wasn't auto-removed based on certain "keywords"? (I think I know which ones you're talking about -- words women get called when they post on the internet.)

You're going to run into miserable people no matter what you do. Heck, there's a crazy lady on the HOA which my husband and I belong to. She's tried to pull all kinds of stunts and I would absolutely hate to be her landlord. I also run into similar personalities at my day job. I'm in sales so they tend to tone it down to me personally but they absolutely at times blast my company and "threaten" to create a competitor. LOL okay.

At the end of the day a lot of people hate "the man." Treat people with respect, stick to your lease and the laws, and let the crazies roll off your back as best you can.

I have received my share of hate as a landlord. I actually wish I would have built my portfolio a few miles from where I live instead of in the same area.  Every school function I go to for my kids, I see a few tenants that I had to evict or who didn't do the right thing when they moved out.

I think this issue holds true for all business owners.  Most movies and TV shows have overtones where the "evil capitalists" are the bad guys, our youth grow up with this narrative. It is an extension of class warfare that seems to be ramping up the last several years.

Whoa whoa whoa. “Also” a liberal? I’m not claiming to be a liberal.

I’m social liberal free market libertarian leaning. I  may have been a bit right of center based on where parties were 10-20 years ago but now old “left of center” would get you called “alt right fascist” by today’s modern 200 genders left. I want no part of ‘em. If anything I’m club #walkaway

I think most tenants just want to go to work and pay their rent so they can spend time with their families.

But like others have said, it only takes 1 really loud tenant to make them all seem like troublemakers. Usually that 1 tenant is disappointed with how their own life has turned out or mad about something inside that they can't control and they will take it out on anyone that they can - their landlord, their waitress, kids, road rage, picking fights on the internet, etc. until they can address the source of their pain they will continue.

I know because when I was a teenager my dad died and I was angry at the world for a long time. Thank God I've moved on!

Anyway I know how hard it can be, but we need remember that their anger is not about us, it's about them.

@James Wise That’s suuuuucks! I could never manage properties. Idk how you do it. It’s worth it for me to pay the 6-8% for property management. What really sucks is when you see investors saying that about their property managers. Than you really know you have a problem. Some tenants will always complain. Not all but some

    Gotcha.  And I totally agree.

Though it does seem that far (FAR) more companies have staked the claim to publishing their left SJW cred publicly vs. how many ever stake out right positions.

@James Wise How much are you getting for those unused diabetic test strips anyhow? I'm sure that could be worked into the BRRRR approach somehow if given enough thought.

@James Wise Sorry to hear! Yes, it's called human nature. This is one of the reasons we can't advance as a society. There are always others who are jealous and want to bring others down. Guess you just have to have thick skin if you want to stay in this business for the long term!

    Try being a lawyer...

I am well experienced with hate, so bring it on. However I gotta say so far I haven't received any hate on the landlord front. But I am somewhat new.

Yesterday I picked up a 3-family and learned that one tenant, with a baby, mind you, does not have hot water for a month now. She wasn't even angry. Maybe some landlords have it coming to them...

I do try to keep the fact that I'm the owner to myself and tell them I'm the manager.

@Amanda G. I appreciate your post. It reminded me of this video showing the hate that gets spewed at women online for doing “men’s” work: https://youtu.be/CEfjTfYlFpc I also work in management in my day job. Most of my staff respond well to my management style, but the low performers seem to end up hating me when they find themselves in the progressive disciplinary process. You can’t take it personally- it’s lonely at the top!
