Hi my Cincinnati friends,

I'm going to start a monthly BP meetup in Cincinnati (unless there already is one that I'm not aware of). Anybody in the Cincinnati area interested in attending? It'll be free and I'll have a local speaker for every event. I'll follow the model that @darren

@Darren Sager created for NYC.

I just moved from NYC to Cincy and think this will be a great way to make new friends!

I talked to @Brandon Turnerabout it and perhaps we can convince him or @Joshua D.to come give us a visit once we get big enough :)

 We do have a great training room! Would be great to put it to use. Also great Pizza joint next door so we could bring in some pies and some drinks.

    Tim,

    Are you able to get a discount from rtacabinets.co below the prices listed on their website? The Shaker description states "MDF center panel". I thought that all ready to assemble cabinets were "all solid wood" with no MDF.

    Do the rta cabinets come standard with soft close drawers and doors? What about the strength/construction of the drawer slides? Are they ball bearing? Do they look like they would hold up under heavy load?

    Are the drawers dovetail joints that can be glued together or are they some type of "cam lock" joints?

    Are there shipping costs or is there an rtacabinets.com distributor within a reasonable driving distance of Cincinnati?

    Sorry to bombard you with questions, but I have found NO source for cabinets in Cincinnati and I think that rtacabinets.com might be the best way to go.

    So what about pre-fab 8 and 9 foot granite slabs? Is Floor and Decor the best source in Cincinnati for these?

    @Tim G.

     Thanks I had not heard of RTA. Can you only order cabinets that need to be assembled? I have done the assembly thing and I hate it. Its slowww. Also I worry about ordering cabinets off the internet. If i get the wring size or a defected cabinet I feel like it will throw a huge wrench in my schedule trying to get it replaced. With that being said for a big enough discount I will deal with this risk, so ill check out RTA more.

    As for what Im using now. I use either surplus ware house ( this is where I bought the dark cabinets in the bi level you mentioned). they are VERY inexpensive $55 a linear foot. Now they are also pretty low quality. As for a white shaker I use MBS or modern building supply. This is down in st bernard. They have about a 1 week lead time on their very basic standard over lay white shaker. Again not super nice quality but the price is right to adjust for the lack of quality.

    I drove past a store called cabinet and granite depot in Fairfield I have been meaning to check out, but havent had the chance.

    @DL Martin

     If your looking for a high quality hardware at a fair cost Surplus ware house has a brand called heritage. These are preassembled so you dont have to go through that headache. They are far from a top notch cabinet but they have some bells and whistles to make them feel top notch.

    As for granite slabs, I have never been able to use them. I would think if you're looking for high quality cabinets with the great hardware you mention you would want to put pay for the custom cut granite as well. Just a thought.

    I hope this helps all of us find the best option!

    @DL Martin  Lot's of questions! lol

    If you sign up for their contractor program, you get 10% off.  They also have sales going on frequently that will give you 10-20% off depending on how much you buy.  I just placed my order a few minutes ago and used the 15% off $3500 discount code (not combined with the 10% off contractor program).  That's odd it says MDF center panel.  The last set I bought were definitely all wood doors.

    The last set I bought was the Traditional White Shaker and it did not have soft close doors/drawers....they were available as upcharges.  I just bought the Elegant White Shaker and the description says soft close doors and drawers included.    Which I find weird since they were cheaper than the Traditional White Shaker.  I've used the regular and soft close drawer slides and they both seemed fine to me.

    The boxes are either cam-lock or screw together connectors.  The drawers are dovetailed together.  I glue everything together during assembly.

    Yes there is shipping.  This last order was for 19 cabinets (doing our personal bathroom too :-) ) and the shipping was $300 with insurance.

    I'll be happy to give out the name of my guy at the Home Depot Pro Desk in West Chester.  He told me he gets about 20-30% off the Hampton Bay line of kitchen cabinets.

    I have never bought the prefab slabs because I don't have anyone to cut them.  So can't help you there.  Floor & Decor is the only place I can remember seeing them though.

    @Jered Sturm

    I'm not sure if they will build the cabinets for you.  Never asked.  I also think that would increase the shipping costs exponentially.  There's another site I price out that does it.  www.kitchencabinetkings.com

    I agree it is slow putting them together.  1 guy usually about a day to get them all built.

    I had an issue with my last order.  The wrong drawer slides came in 1 of the bathroom vanities.  They were quick to get the right stuff shipped out.  Came in a couple days.  Wasn't a big issue for me......but not all of us can do 14 day flips either!!!!!!  HAHA

    This is where I have a hard time and probably over improve.  It's hard for me to look at these really low quality cabinets and justify buying them.  They are cheap and they look cheap most of the time.  I know the name of the game is get in and out for as little money as possible, but I think a little nicer stuff in some areas (kitchen and baths) goes a long way to helping get a higher sale price.

    Cabinet & Granite Depot....yea, been there, done that.  I live 5 minutes from that place.  Owner is a snake in the grass.  They sell the same RTA cabinets I use.  But they build them for you and charge $100-200 more per cabinet.  Buyer beware with them.

    I keep meaning to check out Unity Kitchen & Bath in Fairfield.  A guy on a FB page I'm on seems to recommend them a lot.

    @Jered Sturm

    Whoa, whoa, whoa !!!!

    I'm not looking for "nice " cabinets, I'm looking for super sturdy, ready to assemble, apartment grade cabinets, that are 100% wood, with soft close drawers and doors, dovetail drawer boxes that I can glue together, and that look nice.

    And I want to pay 30% below the prices listed on the rtacabinets.com website. And no shipping.

    And I want to pay $100 for a 9 foot slab ($80 for a 8 foot slab), as shown below. (I hire the fabricator separately on a "labor only" basis)...

    Below is an apartment kitchen that I did in SoCal three weeks ago.

    It's hard to believe that rental property grade cabinets and granite is 30 to 40% higher in Cincinnati than in California. ...

     The reason for MDF center panel is plywood expands in cold weather, the paint would crack. MDF does not expand.

    On a dark color door, you don't have the issue because it's usually stained not painted.

    You usually only find the MDF center panel by white Shaker, or a style similar to that.

    @Joe Fairless

    Looks like I'm going to have to unfortunately bow out as well tonight.  My wife has been in the hospital the last couple days with complications from getting her gallbladder removed and is getting released today.  So I need to be home to help with her and our son.

    Sorry.  Was really looking forward to meeting everyone!
