Hello, My name is Todd Hall. I am currently active duty military and just acquired my first duplex rental. As I do my time in the military I will be consistently working on educating myself and practicing Real Estate Entrepreneurship. Soon I will be attending college to start on my B.S. Degree for Real Estate investment and plan on to continue purchasing rental properties and sharpening my land lording skills. Any and all help or advice is always welcomed!

Welcome to the site Todd, you have found one of the most valuable tools you have to aid in your career. The amount of learning and networking you can do here is priceless. Have you checked out trig (tidewater real estate investor group) yet if not look them up they seem to be pretty good plus they the only group I found in the area. I am still fairly new but let me know if I can ever help with anything. Congrats on your first duplex and good luck on your journey!

You found the place to be! You will find no better place to build a solid platform than bigger pockets. The one thing we all agree up on is that we invest in real estate. Beyond that everyone has a different niche!
My husband is active duty Navy. We bought our first house turned investment in Virginia Beach in Oct. 2011. Watch out as the bug will bite you. We have baby stepped it all the way to 5 houses with another 3 in the works! The navy is an AMAZING way to build your empire!
We self-managing from a distance while working full time. So we do work on furthering our careers. We live very frugally allowing us to live off of one income and save the other. We have further our career and used the W2 income to leverage our real estate portfolio.
I highly recommend you also check out- the blogs, forums and listen to the podcasts. If you see a post you enjoy check out the persons signature. As many of us have created resources around our niche (websites, blogs, etc) so checking out the signature is a great to get more information. Make sure you don't miss out on networking is by filling out your signature, profile and pming people with questions.
Check out the free BiggerPockets Podcast - A weekly podcast with interviews and a ton of great advice. And you get the benefit of having over 90 past ones to catch up on.
Locate and attend 3 different local REIA club meetings great place to meet people gather resources and info. Here you will meet wholesalers who provide deals and all the cash buyers (rehabbers) you will need.
Consider checking out HUD homes for small multi's owner occupied gets first crack.
You might consider Niche or Specialized Housing like student housing. Rents can be 2-4 times more. Remember you don't have to own a property to control it.

First I would like to thank you for your service to this great country. We would not be able to do what we do if you guys and girls didn't do what you do. Secondly continue to educate yourself no matter what because the knowledge you gain will alway remp great reward. Stay connect with your local REI associations, listen to as many podcasts as you can and view as many posts as you can. Before you know it you will be instructing someone else to do the same.
