New to bigger pockets

5 Replies

Hello my name is Jeff. I'm 43 years old and am new to Bigger Pockets. I've been listening to the podcasts for a couple of months now, as I have long considered getting into real estate investing, but never really got up the nerve to get started. I've also been reading a good bit and trying to do all I can to educate myself and prepare to dive into the investment game. What I find so interesting, for lack of a better term, is the fear and anxiety feel related to getting started in real estate. I have been investing in the stock market for a couple decades now and have done so succesfully doing so largely on my own, but when it comes to getting started here I can't seem to "pull the trigger". I have a family and own my own home and I'm looking to work towards an increasing financial independence. I'm encouraged by all the of your success stories and knowledge that I've gained spending time listening to Bigger Pockets is awesome. Just can't seem to get over that hump of getting started.

I hear you. I still work my full time job. Have to keep a roof over my family and food on the table.

But there is nothing that stops you from doing it and working. You have to make smart decisions.

You need to figure out:

How much money do you have to spend?

Are you managing it yourself or going to hire a property manager?

Are you in an area that makes sense financially or do you need to go somewhere else?

Well, in thinking about your input, I'd say that I'm already doing some of these things.  I think what I'm having the most trouble with is finding a local group with which to meet, and either from that group or elsewhere finding a mentor that could help me get over the hump

@Leah Stuever

Thanks for the input!  First, to answer these questions, I have a pretty good idea of how much money I have to invest.  I think the question is how much is enough?  Next, I'm fairly handy and do a large number of repairs and maintaence around my own home, but don't have much time or certainly not the time to maintain multiple units.  I'd likely hire a property manager.  I have an friend who owns a property management company but the old adage of "not going into business with friends or family" gives me some pause.  Thats up for debate. Lastly, I've been doing some research into my market and other surrounding markets, but I probably need to do more.
