Here's an interview with a landlord who was attacked by two men while cleaning an apartment. Very interesting article and a good reminder that we MUST be prepared to defend ourselves. Here's the link:
Here's how the media portrayed the incident. Notice the family members give the usual refrain that the criminal was such a nice boy and wouldn't do anything like this!!! GIVE ME A BREAK!

OK, I agree that you must arm yourself and be prepared to DEFEND yourself at all times.
I will make a suggestion to all that are pro gun, as I am.
Please, please use careful judgment in choosing your words. The reason I state that is that if you were to ever have to defend yourself in such a manner that the perpetrator was indeed terminated, some of your words could be used against you to build a case of premeditated murder.
Please, please do not use any words such as "If i'm ever in that situation I will kill them." or "They better not cross me because they will be DTR."
Or as no name has already posted "The criminal had a choice to avoid the encounter. My only choice is to be a victim and put my fate in their hands or drop them and make sure they are DRT. I made my choice long before they ever made their fatal mistake in their choice of victim."
What is essentially being said here is that you have thought about this scenario before and if it ever happened that you would kill. From my understanding, that is what premeditated murder is, you think about it before and then you kill. (Simplified of course)
If these are your opinions ,than that is fine, just please do not voice them or put them in print because these could possibly, in the end, cause harm to your case.

I would rather be safe than sorry though. As I am sure that in sometime in my life or during my career of REI I will inevitably be put in a situation similar to this.

Good point Justin,
If I'm every attacked, I will first feel guilt for being wealthier than my attackers and for being caucasian. I will then engage in a constructive dialogue with my attackers on the evils of capitalism and how capitalism drove them to their current state of desperation. I will then give them the contact number for the local ACORN office.
If that approach fails, I'll be regrettably forced to blow their *** away.

Well, yeah people think about it beforehand...that's what makes them go to the gun shop and buy a firearm in the first place!

Adding to the carry a weapon thing.
Time to sign up for self defense as well. Working on my green belt myself. I needed backup for the .357 I carry. Sometimes we could be caught without easy access to our weapon.
Like this scenario, he had to kick the armed one to get time to pull his firearm. I recommend Kempo Karate personally. The dont call it the "overkill" art for nothing,

You're absolutely right Tony. Anyone can sign up for martial arts training and find the one right for them - even if they're the world's most hard core pacifist. Buddhist monks won't kill insects out of respect for life and still know how to kill a man with their hands.
I used to study okinawan karate (shorin ryu) and a little bit of kenpo but have been getting into the krav maga recently (israeli martial arts). I gotta tell you, the jews come up with some pretty effective stuff when it comes to self defense. Not surprising since you're talking about a culture that someone has been trying to kill/persecute/oppress at every point in history I can think of.
