I guess we'll see how that tactic works in November:

Speaking on health care Monday, Senator Diane Feinstein said, "I've gotten 90,000 emails and faxes on the health care bill and over 85,000 of them are against it. After all the debate we've had, I can't believe so many people still don't get it!"

    Hey Biff, I never called Ali an idiot...the only time I even used the word in this thread is to describe people who use satire or commentary as their primary news source, and I don't recall Ali ever saying his primary source of news was The Daily Show...

    So, once again, and as usual, you're just making things up. Kinda like all the examples of Fox News I provided above, you just assumed that you could lie and get away with it...that nobody will check your facts...

    If I'm wrong, please provide some evidence...otherwise you're just a lying liar who is making up lies...

    Didn't your mother teach you manners?

    Nope. Just like your mother clearly didn't teach you to tell the truth...

    Look Biff, you can debate without making up lies...it just takes a little bit of extra effort and intelligence...

    As for many of us getting called on gramatical errors etc...I am not getting paid to write this. Secondly, there aren't millions of people who form their opinions based on what I put out there!

    As Ali points out here, journalists are held to a different (higher) standard than the rest of the public when it comes to reporting news.

    Along those lines, here's a list of 30 examples where Fox News has breached The Society of Professional Journalist's Code of Ethics:

    http://mediamatters.org/columns/200910270002

    While some of these example are far less egregious than others, the fact remains that Fox is not a reputable news organization any more so than Comedy Central or any other channel that hosts "news for entertainment" programs...

    And if you're going to say that every news channel does it, please spend a little effort providing examples (as I have done) to support your argument. The only example I've seen so far has been Dan Rather, and as I pointed out, he was fired for his breath of ethics...

    Funny how you've been back to this thread since I asked you to substantiate your lying lies...and you ignored me...

    I guess you're just admitting that you're a lying liar, and were just trying to smear my reputation by writing lies about me (saying that I called Ali an idiot, which I'd never do)...

    If that's not the case, please substantiate your lies. Otherwise, you're just a liar.

    Perhaps you should retitle your thread, "If you can't convince them, make up lies about them."

    Fox did not sue so they could lie, they appealed a lost law suit. From your own link:

    Was the Fox Affiliate wrong in this case? Absolutely. Does this make every story Fox reports full of lies? Of course not.

    Sean Hannity apologized for showing wrong video. So what! Does this make every video Hannity shows wrong?

    Did Fox show wrong video of the Sarah Palin book signing? Yes. Does this change the fact that Sarah Palin's book sat atop the New York Times Best seller list for weeks? Nope.

    At our house, we watch more CNN than we do Fox, but we watch both of them, and others. What bothers me is that someone will watch ONLY CNN or MSNBC or ABC or CBS or even Fox.

    J Scott, do you watch a variety of news or are you one of those who say, "I wouldn't be caught dead watching Fox!"?

    MSNBC mistaking Jesse Jackson for Al Sharpton
    http://newsone.com/nation/news-one-staff/video-msnbc-reporter-mistakes-jesse-jackson-for-al-sharpton/

    Check out CNN
    http://fridayinlove.wordpress.com/2008/03/29/cnn-refuses-to-acknowledge-mistakes/

    Here is a website that lists errors by the likes of “The New York Timesâ€, “MSNBCâ€, “The Chicago Tribuneâ€, AP, “The Washington Postâ€, etc… They are errors in spelling, geography, falsified Toyota recall news, etc…
    http://www.regrettheerror.com/

    We could sit here all year throwing “News Errors†at each other. We could claim they were intentional. We could claim that ‘your error is worst than mine’ ad nauseum.

    The fact of the matter is that most of the major news outlets were down right GIDDY about Obama getting in office. You could see it in their reporting during the campaign. That is what bothers me the most, they can’t just report what the candidates are saying and doing. They have to add their own opinion on the matter.

    Come on, Mike...look at all the facts...

    The law suit was against Fox for wrongful termination -- the plaintiffs argued that they were fired because they wouldn't lie on-air.

    Fox didn't deny the claim that the reporters were asked by the Fox station to lie on-air...they instead argued that there was nothing wrong with asking the reporters to lie.

    If there was a lawsuit that CNN was asking reporters to lie on-air, and CNN didn't deny it, I have a feeling there would be a dozen threads about it here on this forum.

    If you don't consider Fox's actions inappropriate for an organization that claims journalistic integrity, then you and I just have a different ethical compass.

    Sean Hannity apologized for showing wrong video. So what! Does this make every video Hannity shows wrong?

    Nobody ever said *everything* Fox does is wrong (Bush and Obama haven't done *everything* wrong, but they're both bad Presidents).

    But Fox does enough wrong stuff (see my list above for just a taste) that any reasonable person would conclude that Fox is either biased or incompetent.

    Which is it? Who knows. But, clearly it's one or the other.

    And if you claim other news organizations are just as bad, let's see a list of mistakes from one of them like the one I have above...

    J Scott, do you watch a variety of news or are you one of those who say, "I wouldn't be caught dead watching Fox!"?

    I hardly watch any news on TV. And when it comes to world news, I don't get any of it from the American media. If you want true journalistic integrity, read/watch the BBC or other award-winning International journalists.

    American media is a joke.

    Biff -

    I don't expect you to know this since you don't watch TV, but The Daily Show is different because it *DOESN'T* call it news reporting (at least not in any way that is not satirical).

    In fact, the writers open reject the idea that they are a news source. They refer to the show as "fake news" and "satire" and have responded to critics by saying that they have no journalistic responsibility whatsoever.

    Unlike other "news" outlets where the hosts take themselves very seriously, The Daily Show is all about entertainment. Sure, that entertainment is left-leaning political satire, but just because the satirical topic is politics and just because the format of the show resembles a news program doesn't make it news.

    Sure, there are some idiots who use The Daily Show as their primary source of news (probably a lot of idiots, actually), just like there are a lot of idiots who use Rush, Keith Olbermann and Bill O'Reilly as their main source of political news.

    But again, the difference is that Jon Stewart never claims to offer anything other than satirical entertainment, while the rest of those jerk-wads act like what they are saying is the word of God.

    J Scott, that is the part that Tim was referring to. Actually after reading your post, I was under the same impression that you had point blank called me an idiot.

    I was going to point out that I didn't use the daily show as my primary source, but rather as my secondary source. Despite the satire (which comes in handy to make a point) they sometimes have some great common sense points.

    Actually, (hang on, let me get my asbestos suit on) the single most accurate person in media, as determined by an external opinion-audit, is Rush Limbaugh.

    He is right, in opinion as well as fact, I believe it is now 98.6% of the time.

    It went up recently (think what it takes to move the % when you consider that the man has been talking for 3 hours a day, 15 hours a week since the mid 1980's I think it is) since he was basically proven completely right about the Anthropogenic Global Warming theory being a complete fraud.

    (http://www.climatedepot.com monitors the climategate debacle continuously if you're not informed on the topic)

    Whether you are liberal (40%), moderate (36%), or you're one of the 20% that identify yourself as a liberal- you can get more news, more accurately reported, in the first half hour of Rush Limbaugh's show than anyplace else.

    Personally, I don't bother with news. Anything truly important will come to your attention, anything you're curious about, your news junkie friends will tell you about, and the rest- well, the rest just doesn't matter. In fact, MOST of it doesn't matter. The stuff that does matter, is like the weather in Chicago- it'll change in about 10 minutes.

    Supposed to, yes. But when you are just reading a story from the AP wire, you assume that they already had it looked over. That attitude was the beginning of news people not being journalists. They felt that they were covered because they reported it as "AP is reporting" and then just read the story.
    Now with everyone knowing that AP is "story central" they feel that they dont even have to make that statement anymore.
    And when I said even here about the errors, I was not speaking about the business side, just the political side.
    Everyone makes the ocassional error, and that is ok, but when it is continous even after being pointed out to them, then one could assume intent. That is J Scott's belief in this matter and I AGREE. I have seen FOX slant things just as bad as some others.
    Maybe it is because my leanings are toward their slant that I do not notice it as much with them, but I have noticed it, if I were to be honest. I would bet JScott could say the same thing about his favorite "source".

    I meant the real estate business as far as when grammar really matters, have an attorney read it (leases, contracts, etc...). As far as the AP I know they look it over for grammar alone but they ram those press releases through like and assembly line and their editors are mostly kids fresh from college who've just been exposed to the greatest authors in history, all of whom were the worst grammarians.

    You don't need an asbestos suit, but a link to some supporting objective data would be nice.

    The only time I've ever heard this statistic was out of The Sullivan Group, a financial brokerage run by a guy named Thomas Sullivan. For reference, Tom Sullivan is a personal friend of Rush's, has a show on Fox News, and has been a guest host on Rush's show many times.

    If you think that's a reliable source of data on Rush's accuracy, then you'd probably agree that Joe Biden is an accurate source of data on Obama's success.

    Now, of course, if you truly have objective, independent data that supports your claim, please post it here.

    Otherwise, keep in mind that 91.42% of all statistics are fabricated, and I think it's safe to say this one is as well (but I'll reserve judgment until you post a link to the data).

    Also keep in mind that my mom now says that I am the cutest boy in the world, with a cuteness rating of 99.83%. I'm glad that's now settled as well...

    He is right, in opinion as well as fact, I believe it is now 98.6% of the time.

    I think you just derailed yourself already...

    How can you say that someone "...is right, in opinion..." any percentage of the time. It doesn't mean anything to be correct or incorrect in opinion...

    Again, if you have independent supporting data, let's see it...

    (http://www.climatedepot.com monitors the climategate debacle continuously if you're not informed on the topic)

    Ah, yes, Climate Depot...

    If you want Exxon Mobile's take on climate issues, Climate Depot is a great place to look. Exxon Mobile gives lots of money for "research" to this organization, and everyone knows that when corporations are funding research, it's got to be completely objective, right?

    Whether you are liberal (40%), moderate (36%), or you're one of the 20% that identify yourself as a liberal- you can get more news, more accurately reported, in the first half hour of Rush Limbaugh's show than anyplace else.

    A report out of Atlanta from The Make-Believe Group, an independent third party news monitoring firm, says that Jerry Springer actually just passed Rush Limbaugh in terms of accuracy in news reporting. Apparently, Jerry is now correct -- in both fact and opinion -- 99.6% of the time!

    Wow!

    Didn't you see "Men in Black?" They said the most accurate information available is "The National Enquirer". Weren't they one of the first to report the Tiger Woods situation?

    Let's see, Rush Limbaugh or Keith Olberman? Hmmmm? Sean Hannity or Katie Couric? Hmmmm? Laura Ingram or Nancy Grace? Hmmmm? Didn't Nancy Grace have the Duke LaCrosse boys tried, judged and convicted in about 3 seconds? Glenn Beck or Dan Rather? Hmmm? Dan Rather got fired and Glenn Beck got promoted.

    For a final tally, check Cable Ratings for CNN, MSNBC, FOX.

    I think with all news sources, if you take everything they say with a grain of salt, check multiple news sources and then flip a coin, you have a solid 50/50 shot at getting it right. That's the only statistic I'll hang my hat on.

    Maybe J Scott has a point:

    An Obituary printed in the London Times - not a joke and makes you think!

    Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.
    No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

    He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
    Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
    Why the early bird gets the worm;
    Life isn't always fair;
    and maybe it was my fault.

    Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
    His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
    overbearing regulations were set in place:
    Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate;
    Teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch;
    A teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

    Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

    It declined even further when schools were required to get parental
    consent to administer sunscreen or an Aspirin to a student; but could
    not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

    Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

    Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

    Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot.
    She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

    Common Sense was preceded in death
    by his parents, Truth and Trust;
    by his wife, Discretion;
    by his daughter, Responsibility and
    by his son, Reason.

    He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers:
    I Know My Rights
    I Want It Now
    Someone Else Is To Blame
    I am a Victim

    Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
