I guess we'll see how that tactic works in November:

Speaking on health care Monday, Senator Diane Feinstein said, "I've gotten 90,000 emails and faxes on the health care bill and over 85,000 of them are against it. After all the debate we've had, I can't believe so many people still don't get it!"

You make the assumption that Glenn Beck was wrong. God forbid he was promoted for being right. We know Dan Rather was wrong, he admitted it.

Larry, Common Sense was murdered by one thing, GREED.

For all you Fox News fans, here's another example of on-air lies called out (this time by Jon Stewart) that you can try explaining to me...

    http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-april-8-2010/the-big-bang-treaty

Do they just not do their research? Do they not understand what they read during their research? Or do they purposefully lie?

It has to be one of those...

There's one more statistic you can count on. 100% of the time they're making money (with the exception of Air America). Some may be losing market share but they're still profitable. They are a business...and look how much attention in this thread they've garnered for themselves as well as links posted for traffic and google searchable terms used.

A lot of the best journalists didn't get into the business for the money, which is even more frustrating about how bad media is today. We have these people who are willing to dedicate (and risk) their lives by going behind enemy lines, by going into war zones, by going into areas hit by natural disaster, etc...and the stations they work for don't have enough respect for journalism to report the news in an honest and ethical manner.

Take the video I posted two posts above...

Fox News apparently thinks it's more important to sway their viewers opinion of a piece of news (the arms treaty signature) by stating incorrect facts than actually giving the public accurate information.

It's bad enough that there is commentary in our journalism (in pretty much every single American media outlet), but to outright lie is just a travesty.

Also, after doing some research, I found this:

    http://people-press.org/report/319/public-knowledge-of-current-affairs-little-changed-by-news-and-information-revolutions

(By the way, see what I did there? I provided independent third-party data to support the claims I was making...pretty cool, huh?)

Perhaps I should have been more careful before assuming that people who got their news from The Daily Show were idiots -- according to Pew, those who watch The Daily Show know more about current events than those who get their news from any other source.

Bill O'Reilly is also high up there, but Fox News is all the way down at the bottom. I guess I should be revising my view of O'Reilly (more positive) and Fox News (even worse than I thought).

It's really sad when the most watched news network also has the most stupid audience (about politics, at least).

You are correct, Greed always has accomplices. A person's Greed always has contributing factors.

People take so many things for granted and won't miss it until it is taken away. Then, it is much more difficult to regain something than it is to hold something.

Until we get rid of Peolsi, Feinstein, Boxer, Reid and their ilk, we will continue to lose the freedoms that we hold so dear. I rue the day that this country may face if we get 8 years of the current administration.

    J Scott,
We'll just have to agree to disagree on some things. However, I would hope that on several issues you would at least be open to alternative views.

With respect to "climate gate" there are plenty more sources of information on that.- including the scientist at the center of the scandal, Phil "Hide The Decline" Jones himself.

Below are quotes from Mr. Jones. They are not from Rush Limbaugh, or Exxon Mobile. They are from Phil Jones:

Asked about whether he lost track of data, Professor Jones said: ‘There is some truth in that. We do have a trail of where the weather stations have come from but it’s probably not as good as it should be.

‘There’s a continual updating of the dataset. Keeping track of everything is difficult. Some countries will do lots of checking on their data then issue improved data, so it can be very difficult. We have improved but we have to improve more.’

He also agreed that there had been two periods which experienced similar warming, from 1910 to 1940 and from 1975 to 1998, but said these could be explained by natural phenomena whereas more recent warming could not.

He further admitted that in the last 15 years there had been no ‘statistically significant’ warming, although he argued this was a blip rather than the long-term trend.

However, we have to be very careful that we are not naive. This means that conservatives have to avoid being pulled into a scientific debate that is truly more of a political and religious debate.

Proponents of global warming are a diverse bunch to be sure, and not all think the same way- but at the core of the "movement" are basically people who seek the destruction of the western capitalist economic model.

This is not in dispute, by the way- it's just fact.

The reason I hope we can agree that there's more to global warming than science, and the reason it is so critical to promoters of the theory that it be "man-made" even if they have to use the "nature trick" or "hide the decline" is that it's not their scientific careers that hang in the balance, but an entire world-wide political agenda.

To all- if you can make sense of this single issue to your lib friends- you will shatter the foundations of their belief system, and you will begin to unwind their cloudy thinking.

The key to converting liberals is to help them understand that they are the useful idiots for a handful of political elites who ultimately seek their destruction.

Yes, like all the "facts" you presented about Rush Limbaugh being trustworthy without substantiation...though I'm still open to any data you can provide to substantiate your claims...

However, I would hope that on several issues you would at least be open to alternative views.

With respect to Global Warming (as that is what the rest of your post was about), I think the people who say warming is man-made are just as crazy as people who say warming isn't man-made.

I'm an engineer and scientist by education, and as I laid out in another thread (where I was called a nerd and a geek by some), it's impossible to use the scientific method to determine what (if anything) is causing global warming.

Due to the fact that the planet is an open system and the fact that there are confounding variables that would make scientific testing indeterminate, we can't know for sure what causes long-term changes in our weather patterns here on earth.

So, while you say that those who claim global warming is man-made don't have any evidence, I would say that neither does the other side either!

And if either side thinks they have conclusive scientific proof, then they don't understand how the scientific method works.

The key to converting liberals is to help them understand that they are the useful idiots for a handful of political elites who ultimately seek their destruction.

Again, if you fully understood the scientific method and how it relates to this issue, you'd realize that the idiots are on both sides. The intelligent ones are the ones that recognize that there is no way to prove it one way or the other.

SO, I'm not going to ask you to substantiate your global warming beliefs with data, because you can't. Neither side can. That's a scientific fact.

A little extreme, isn't it? I would say that it is extremism on both sides that cloud people's brains not anything else.

Also, without liberals there would be no conservatives, so don't bother "converting" them all.

Well, to quote one of my favorite conservatives- the Grand Daddy of the Reagan Revolution, "I would remind you that extremism in defense of liberty is no vice; and moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!" (Barry Goldwater)

I happen to think that "extremism" in the sense that you ardently believe, support, and defend sound principles, rather than "cloud peoples minds" is actually a clarifying agent.

We ought not moderate in defending "The 5,000 Year Miracle"- this experiment in individual liberty and limited government that has changed the world.

We ought not return to the dark ages before the United States Consitution.

It is worthy of note that Hammurabi and George Washington essentially got around and communicated the same way, but look at us now.

Do our rights come from our Creator? Or does government define our rights?

The "Green Movement" is a watermelon. Green on the outside, but RED in the middle. It is not designed to save the planet, but to support a progressive political agenda that seeks to control our lives.

That's why the left is in a panic over the actual science. Get rid of the man-made global warming hysteria, and panic- and the progressives lose a major pretext for massive government control, taxation, and redistribution.

If that's your opinion then we likely agree more than we disagree.

This is a far cry from the ridiculous "The debate is over" and "the science is settled" nonsense we've been getting from the radical environmentalists.

We've been getting "The debate is over" and "the science is settled" from BOTH sides. The funny thing is, it's mostly coming from politicians and lay-people, and not scientists themselves.

If you ask scientists who have studied the data (and I have asked a few), the general consensus is that the planet is most likely warming, the likelihood of continued warming is completely unknown, the environmental and human impact *IF* the warming continues is likely large (that's an *IF*), and the cause of the warming is completely unknown and most likely completely unknowable in scientific terms.

So, if you believe scientists (not the politicians), global warming probably is really happening, but there's no reason to believe it's man-made or that it will continue.

Personally, while I have only seen small sets of data, and while admittedly I have absolutely no expertise in climate science (though I do have a lot of expertise in statistical and data analysis), my gut tells me that this is probably a pretty accurate view from a data perspective.

All that said, while I'm probably more knowledgeable about this than 99% of people (not saying much), my knowledge in the area is absolutely minuscule. So, it's probably safe to say that the knowledge that politicians and most lay-people have is less than minuscule.

Unfortunately, the best data is generated by scientists who work for government or quasi-government organizations (like NASA), and for the most part, those scientists are not being allowed to publish unedited opinion.

Does this mean that there's a massive cover-up by the government? Possibly... Does this mean that there is *necessarily* a massive cover-up? Nope...there are other reasonable explanations.

In my opinion, any reasonable person would conclude that there is absolutely no way to know what's really going on, and a part of that is due to government intervention. Part of it is due to science not being advanced enough. And part of it is due to the fact that everyone has their own agenda.

So, that's why when it comes to the issue of global warming, I take a very firm "I have no f***ing idea" stance, and I think everyone else should to...at least at this point.

To say that you're convinced one way or the other at this point in time is to put your faith in people who probably don't know what they're talking about (on both sides).

That's the thing Paul. The reality is you don't need to prove anything much beyond disproving the theories that radical environmentalists put out there as gospel.

That's the b.s. here. How many scientists, even the self proclaimed ones here (though it bears noting that an enigneer is about as much a natural scientist as an economist, a sociologist or a linguist is), have you ever heard call it "The THEORY of Global Warming"? This theory of global warming is so theoretical that they have been forced to rename it "climate change" in face of the data coming out against the original warming theory (this is the disproving of theories I'm referring to). That little bit of semantics, which always seems to be applied to Einstein without debate, is glaringly missing. What's worse....they're giving out Nobel prizes to people who are advancing computer model conclusions to an unproven theory with ever increasing disproven elements - and you can search the archives here where some of the self proclaimed scientists CITE Al Gore's Nobel prize, which was based on these computer model conclusions with no proving of the theory, as some sort of evidence for justification when arguing for global warming/climate change legislation. It's at least 6 months old but if you're willing to search for it here on Bigger Pockets, you will find it. Funny though...since Obama got the Nobel, they haven't brought it up....

    Paul,
I had an epiphany. I found the disconnect between scientific data disproving global warming and the scientific modeling "proving" it within my own previous post. Global warming scientists have abandoned the natural sciences and have gone to the applied sciences - which is why the whole argument is based on computer modeling. The applied sciences don't use the scientific method. They don't need it. They have their theoretical model in place and do nothing but R&D it until they reach the conclusion they have set out for. It's the Manhattan Project - only with weather and a lot of opportunities for legislative control and tort this time.

There is a problem....climate is itself an earth science, in other words a natural science. This is why more and more prominent meteorologists are coming out against the theory of global warming.

    Biff -

I assume you're referring to me. I have an engineering degree, with math and physics minors.

I realize that is no match for your Lit degree, but hopefully it gives me some degree of scientific background.

...have you ever heard call it "The THEORY of Global Warming"?

    Here we go again, Biff...

Since you didn't understand what the scientific method was in a previous post, I shouldn't be surprised that you don't understand what a formal scientific Theory is either...

You know, it's called Newton's Theory of Gravity too...do you dispute it because it's called a "Theory"? How about Circuit Theory...do you dispute that one, despite the fact that you're sitting in front of computer designed around that Theory?

Again, I realize you have a Lit degree...but apparently the basics of 8th grade science weren't a prerequisite for that degree.

Perhaps you should go look up the definition of Theory (in a scientific sense, not a layman's sense), and get back to us...

 I dispute Newton's Theory of Gravity because it was disproven by Einstein's Theory of General Relativity

Good grief, first you botch the method for controlled experiments and now this.....and you MAJORED in an applied science? Keep telling us how much smarter and more qualified you are.

Wow Biff, you just continue to embarrass yourself with your ignorance...apparently you didn't pay attention in 9th grade science either...the sad thing is you're serious...

Einstein didn't "disprove" Newton with General Relativity any more than Heisenberg disproved General Relativity with Quantum Mechanics.

All three laid forth accepted scientific theories and made accurate predictions for objects on different scales. Newton on "standard" sized objects, Einstein on exceptionally large/dense objects, and Heisenberg on exception small objects (subatomic particles).

No offense, but you're probably better off continuing to try to insult me by calling me a nerd than you are trying to argue with me about high-school science...

Next you're going to tell us the earth is only 5000 years old and that humans co-existed with dinosaurs? Or was the invention of dinosaurs just part of the liberal agenda?

But getting back to the Rush Limbaugh opinion audit- it IS the "Sullivan Group". I don't know about all the connections between the founder and Rush- and personally don't care.

Rush is right enough of the time that he is, as he says, "On the cutting edge of societal evolution".

Nothing is more entertaining than when his jokes come true-- which with this President (Obama)-- happens quite frequently.

Case in point: Rush joked awhile back that Obama should be an American Idol judge. Lo, and behold...

So, you quote a statistic that you claim is accurate, yet you don't really care if it is or not, and you're certainly not willing to do the due diligence necessary to find out...

In other words, you don't mind spreading misinformation as long as that misinformation conforms to your personal belief system...

Sounds like you've learned a lot from Rush...

You misunderstand. I don't care about your allegations of a conspiracy / friendship between Rush and the founder of The Sullivan Group.

You made THAT claim, and YOU claimed it compromised the data- so that would be for YOU to substantiate. I don't have to prove something you claim isn't true. That's not how it works. YOU make a claim, YOU back it up. THAT is how it works.

It's kind of like anthropogenic global warming. No one is obligated to provide any evidence that it's not happening. It is for those making the claim to substantiate. Thus far, they've been unable to do so.

For the rest of us to point that inconvenient truth out and be compared to holocaust deniers shows you the depravity of the promoters of the extreme environmental movement- and yes, I would put Al Gore out on the extreme fringe. He is well beyond the borders of rational, scientific discussion.

Paul, just because you quoted Goldwater doesn't make extremism right. Many religions, organizations and even countries have been plagued with extremism. Ahmedinijad of Iran is an extremist, he believes that holocaust never happened. Is he correct? Afterall he is an extremist, would Goldwater agree with him? How about Bin Ladin? He is also an extremist?

What about the people from the Fred Phelps Church? and the examples can go on and on.

Passion for your cause will put you on the cutting edge, extremism, however might throw you over that same edge!
