You can also try angieslist.com. That site is pretty good at creating good contractor leads that you can use. They are proactive about self promoted reviews and there are thousands of contractors to choose with reviews from past clients. Some small contractors eat off of Angies List so you should have pretty good success at finding what you are looking for there.

Personally I would only hire someone who came highly recommended from a family member, friend or colleague who used and was satisfied with their services. There are just too many contractors and other service providers out here today who are simply ripping people off. I've been in the business for 12 years and I've never seen it this bad. But the recession will bring out the worse in people.

I have my list of contractors to use. In addition, depend on the project, I look up angieslist too. They have some good quality contractors. The contractors I use have done works for us and show us quality work. I had used craigslist before. It is hit and miss situation. I have to put my eye on the contractors when it comes to craigslist.

I like to ask Realtors who the big house flippers in the area are. Then, contact them and ask for referrals. They love referring their favorite contractors because it looks good on them.
