In late May of 2014 I bought a short sale and renovated the home and yard. It soon became summer and with my kids out of school (a 4 and a 7-year old), we spent a lot of time as a family at the home. I did quite a bit of work on the yard and some on the interior. Mostly, I was babysitting subcontractors and laborers who remodeled the kitchen, re-stained wood floors, painted walls, installed carpet, etc.

As with a most large renovations, there were some unusual challenges. One was a large, overgrown trampoline pit in the back yard. My first thought was to fill it in with dirt and lay sod. After using a 10-pound sledge hammer for way too long trying to remove the cinderblocks, re-bar and anchor cement, I thought "There must be a better option!" I have seen some awesome firepits in This Old House magazine and Houzz.com and I decided to make one with the giant, rectangular hole. I used treated and regular lumber to frame-out the benches and then skinned the framework with Hardiplank cement board. I stained the Hardiplanks and dumped some gravel in the bottom of the pit. The metal fire ring was $69 at Home Depot. The firepit was one of the first projects I completed on the home so the kids begged to roast marshmallows every evening we were there! We made some really fun memories!

I submitted the "before and after" photos to This Old house Magazine several months ago and just last month they told me to watch for it in this month's issue! They said they loved the re-purposing aspect and that it was a small-budget project. The materials were only about $400. I also think it was a great selling feature when I sold the house last fall.

Below are the progress photos:

Well done!  I'm a big fan of TOH and The Family Handyman magazines.  Great job envisioning a nice outdoor space from a hole in the ground and making it happen.  I'm impressed.

I'm not surprised they chose to feature your project. That's a fantastic use of that space! Also, I love TOH and I'll now have "Louisiana Fairytale" running through my head for the next 24h..

@Douglas Larson it is nice to see a ideal becoming a beautiful reality. It's an added bonus for peers to acknowledge it and publish it in This Old House. Thanks for sharing and congratulations!.

Man, that´s cool and all being featured in the magazine, but I think the real point is...just HOW cool is that firepit! I guess I´ve never seen the kind of trampoline pit that this was (I can imagine it, though), but that is just one awesome use of that space - I can only imagine how much fun that must´ve been with the family.

    Thanks @David Hays

It was a fun project because it came together quickly and made a big, ugly pit into something cool and useable! My kids keep begging me to put one in our own backyard. A functional, dug-in trampoline might also be an asset when trying to sell a home but this pit and frame were old and broken, and I think the firepit conversion added way more value for the average buyer.

    Thanks again.

    Thanks @Ingrid J.

Not everything we do is fun but it can be cool to look back at some projects and feel a little pride. Have fun with your aspirations in Norway! I'm sure your prices make cash-flow a bit more difficult on rental homes, but with creativity you can always make something work. I have had several flips and rentals in expensive markets (Maui, Hawaii, San Diego, Calif, and Park City, Utah). My only regret is selling most of them. Keep your focus and enjoy the journey!

That is super cool and creative! I'm not surprised your project was featured if that is the sort of creativity you display.  Awesome job!

@Douglas Larson Definitely! Nice. Yes, certain markets are more appreciation than cashflow based.

Thanks for the Kudos my BP friends! My current project has 2 ugly doghouses left behind by the previous owner...

Hmmmm.... I wonder if I can come up with some irresistible eye-candy there! Any ideas?

Thanks @Royce Talbo! ... and Aloha! I think I would be even more creative if I were back on Oahu!... or Maui .... I lived in Laie for a few years going to school and then lived in Honolulu for a bit and then upcountry Maui for 5 years! I miss it every day!

How is the real estate out there these days! Still expensive and going up!?!

@Douglas Larson Yup still expensive and still going up hahaha.  Dont worry after you make your millions you can always come back to retire here.  I also like Maui and will either retire there or Kauai.

What a fab project, @Douglas Larson!  Great upgrade from ugly to wow, and deserves to be in a glossy mag!

Thank you for sharing the details of how you achieved it.
