I would start doing regular inspections every 3-6 months during which time you can also change the filter on the furnace and check batteries in smoke alarms. 

I have used bedside tables with drawers to leave ear plugs, phone charger, fan remote/batteries but great point about the possibility of cleaners not checking reliably and drawer-less being cheaper too.
