Did I just read that right?! BP has more site members than topics posted? If that doesn't point to "lurkiness" I don't know what does!

I can't be blamed for it..I have done my part so far by starting 35 posts..I am picking so much slack here.. :-)
Maybe we should start digging up frequent visitors that don't post. Would that help?
It still baffles me that people read for, visit, study, etc. and don't contribute or post at all.

That's a great idea. I heard from someone that Yelp does something similar for their website that they only accept or show reviews from active members to make the reviews on their site more credible.
OTOH, one of the things that makes BP so great is that you don't even need to make a post here to start benefiting from the vast knowledge of other members like you.
I'm too lazy to do it...but you could if you looked at the list on the stats page and did it by hand.
All you lurkers...please contribute!

That isn't a great stat . . . as you all know, we're open to suggestions -- so, got any for drawing the lurkers out of the dark?

How about a cumulative lurker top ten list on the stats page? We could do a stat for the last month and all-time. They could be relative stats based on post count per unit of time or some such.

Not to be rude, but don't some people join and then not come back? Leading to high subscriber numbers but not high post numbers? Just a thought.
That is obviously true Katherine...but there are MANY people that lurk and never post. Baffles me...

I would like to post more but too many threads go off topic very quickly. Some posters prefer to talk about what they want to talk about vs. the original posters question or concern. Unfortunately it seems like it is the most popular posters doing this as they have grudge matches with other popular posters. I do not remember it being this way a year ago, but it is definitely more apparent now. I find that I do not post as much because of this and takes away from the quality of this site. If I were new to the site I'm not sure I would have stuck around for as long as I have because of this. I check the site almost everyday but rarely post on it anymore. So I guess you could define me as a lurker.

Justin - If there are things like this that are happening, please do point them out to us. With hundreds of posts every day, we do need the help of the membership to keep up our duties of moderation. If you're seeing topics go off topic or other things that turn you off that we're not responding to, please help.
We want to keep the level of quality, but it is long-time members like you who really can help us the most with that.
Thanks for the feedback, as always!

I've read time and time again about "real estate investors" who have never done a single deal. I think that alot of people are enticed by the idea of real estate but lack experience and guts to go through with a deal. So lots of people like to read and learn about investing, but without first hand knowledge, they are unable to actually contribute to the forums.
I'm not saying thats the only reason for having more member than topics, but I'm sure it contributes. I know thats a reason for me. I love reading about others' experience but without first hand knowledge, I'm not going to answer questions and pretend I know what I'm talking about.
Isn't the situation kinda like real-life classroom? Students register and attend a class, but some students prefer to sit in the back and not participate. Some students who want to get the most out of the course sit in the front and actively participate.
It's the students sitting in the back who are hurting themselves by not participating. Even if we forced them to participate, what good would that bring?
Just by 2 cents.

Doesn't scare me in the least but then I'm not easily intimidated. I signed up and posted here without lurking but I was all excited about finding this forum and if the stoopid showed, so what.
There is soooo much info here that it's overwhelming for the newbie so I don't see anything wrong with lurking since it's part of learning the biz.
The big dogs rule here (and that's not a bad thing) and until I'm ready to run with them, I'm staying on the porch.
