Just curious how many of my BP family has experienced negative pushback from family members when you discuss your real estate goals with them? I remember watching one of the webinars recently where they talked about telling everyone you knew your goals. Well pretty much everyone I've talked to thinks it's a bad idea. "You'd be crazy to waste your money like that" is just one of the responses I've gotten.
"Don't take advice from anyone you wouldn't trade shoes with"
Don't worry about them, you will get A LOT of negative feedback, being scared about the "what if" scenarios, whereas if you have a business plan-- trust it and move forward! If you think you can do it, and logically it makes sense-- do it!
Don't let naysayers bother you, those type of people live off fear. We currently have 5 properties, and one of my friends said "OMG, what if all 5 HVACs went out at 1 time, you'd be broke!" stuff like that, totally normal for simple minded people.. whereas if you run it like a business, it's all part of the plan.

@Jessie Nunley just IMO! We all have our own life to live, at one time or another we all made a decision in life that wasn't the best but we dealt with it and moved on. Just like REI, some of us made poor decisions I know I did and I've learned from it. The lesson is in order to succeed you have to take a chance. Its like when we learn how to walk for the first time, think about it, we don't know how so technically we're taking a chance and eventually we learn how to walk. Some may take longer than others but at the end of the day we reached our goal to walk. Always keep them Negative folks on your corner and keep feeding them info because their negativity will be the motivation you need!!! Good luck

Everyone has fear. Successful people have a bias for action in spite of it.
What often happens is that when the mind shift happens that family and friends often don't come along for the ride, and it becomes difficult to maintain those relationships.
It's kind of like joining a new religion....

Sometimes you have to keep your dreams and goals from people who don't understand. It will kill your spirit listening to negativity. Progress is still progress even if you are moving at a slow pace.

Wow, this is a great thread! So glad you asked that question, it was personally helpful to me. I am a realtor and my husband isn't supportive of me investing in real estate! He is all about the stock market and I think there is WAY more risk on that side of the investing coin! Best of luck, Jessie! Swing for the fences!!

@Jessie Nunley I totally understand where you are coming from. I just got started in RE myself. My mom found one of my RE books. She questioned me about it and when I told her I was going into real estate investing, she said, "ugh, being a landlord is hard." This coming from someone who has never done anything but work a 9 to 5 all her life. Like I would take RE advice from her. My response, "I will be fine, thanks." After that exchange, I keep my RE business to myself.

Find people who are successful and share your vision for your business. I would say, if you are married, you absolutely need to have your spouse on board. But otherwise, it doesn't matter what your family thinks, don't discuss it with them.

There's no doubt the "average" person does not possess many attributes that are required in my humble opinion to be a successful entrepreneur. So they try to dissuade you from being great her than them. Use it as fuel! When a so-called friend or family member has negative comments ask yourself this...
Does that person;
-Embody a make it happen attitude
-Believe in themselves in any situation
-Lead or follow
-Have the ability to see themselves as above average
-Have the ability to sacrifice time away from TV, sports, video games, beer etc. to spend time learning and networking
-Have the ability to see the future
If you answered no to any one of these questions then you already know the answer.
Success is born of many things, negativity typically isn't one of them.
Good luck and many victories on you journey.

@Jonathan Jewell that was one of the most motivating stories i have ever heard.thanks for sharing
i'd suggest sharing your goals with a mentor/s and a supportive peer group of real estate investors ALONE.Negative Nancy naysayers do not see what you you see

@Kuba F. Well I certainly hope that I am able to maintain the relationships I currently have! I just think my interests will shift away from being similar to theirs.

@Marvin S. although I created this thread because I didn't like the response I was getting from family members; I think in the end it will be a big benefit to my future goals to have those naysayers!
At some underlying level, I know that I got into RE for the simple reason OF proving people wrong. I'm sure that could be said about any path I would have chose. I will say this. Within two months I will be handed a check for close to $200k on a property that EVERYONE said to stay away from. Friends, family, local RE agents that 'sold over 2,000 properties', that own half the town, etc; all told us 'as your friends' to stay away from the one place.
Now we have passerby's telling us how lovely the place looks. How much nicer it is. 'How did you see the potential in what was here before? It's beautiful!'
My point is that the ones saying don't do it can have their opinion, and you can have yours. We had 20 people telling us not to, but pretty soon we're going to have 200,000 reasons why we should have.
What would you rather have? If you believe in your plan then do it.
With a description like that, you need to share before and after pics in a Real Estate Success Story Forum post. I'd love to see how you made $200k!
