The End of the BiggerPockets 'Influence' System

The End of the BiggerPockets 'Influence' System

A little over 3 years ago, we initiated a system on the site called 'influence'. This
Influence System was designed to reward those users who engage and give back to BiggerPockets.

At first, the system was lauded almost universally by our members, but at a certain point in time it started to become a point of contention. Eventually we changed the system to one that we believed to be more fair and even, but unfortunately, in evaluating the system and your reaction to it, we realized that perhaps the system was doing more harm than good.

Many of our users felt that 'influence' wasn't an accurate measure of their actual influence on the site, and sadly, some of our power users were turned off and cut their participation here.

While I'll argue that the system always did what it was designed to do -- measure those people who at any point in time were making the most impact on the site -- I'm also willing to accept that the system was never perfect by any means.

With that in mind, as we continue our push to improve the site and execute 'Project Simplify' we've decided that it is time for influence to become a relic of the past.

As you can see, there is no longer an influence score reflected on the forum sidebar or on your profiles. As a gift to you for our 8th BiggerPockets Birthday, we've killed off the influence system.

I know several people who will be very happy about this, and extend an invitation to them to return to the site. For those of you who liked the system, I'm sorry, but it just had to go.

Like anything else that we do, I expect strong reaction here. As some of you like to say [pulls out the popcorn] . . .

    I think removing the focus from a "number" is, in the end, a good thing. My most gratifying responses from others include things like
    "I read your post on BP and really appreciated your detailed response" or "I noticed your posts on BP and you provide good and valuable perspective" or something of the sort.

    It is the most rewarding when it comes from someone local to me who I meet at either my Black Diamond meetings or on a phone call or at other meetings.

    I've never ever had someone say: I noticed your influence points were increasing so I decided to call you.

    So there it is.

    It's a good thing. If youre a "people watcher" like me...its easy to see that despite better judgement, there was some fluff being posted. And the ONLY reason I could fathom was influence points and/or ego.

    Hopefully this move will cut down on some of the fluff so me and all the other newbies can more easily find the "meaty" posts.

    Josh -

    I'm sure you know that I love BP. I wouldn't still be involved as a weekly contributor if I didn't feel that way. But I have to say that I never really understood why it was set up to have the feeling of a "contest" with the person posting the most often having a higher number of influence; a percieved better standing within the community.

    I believe that removing this system will encourage people that wouldn't normally post to begin to get involved, as they will feel that even though they weren't "influential" they are still valued and their opinion is valued.

    I enjoy competition, but I am very happy in this situation to see the influence system go away.

    I love to give back to the site any way that I can. There are times though that there are few posts that I really feel that I can add value to. It is hard to create a system that can judge and value content contributed. It seemed meaningless to me to have a system that counted postings and perhaps a few other metrics as influence. It seemed to indicate that some were giving value to the community while others were giving perhaps little or less value to the community. In my opinion real influence is hard to capture with a program. There are to many subjective things to consider. It is also one of the reasons I don't think you can completely automate real estate investing. Real estate investing is more than just the numbers.

    It occurred to me that you can use the vote system for the posts to valuate the experience of the members here.

    Example: system should start at 0 points and for each 10 votes on any posts the poster will receive 1 point to the "experience system".
    I would limit the number of votes the poster can receive in one topic, so if he post 4 replys in only one topic he should only receive votes on 1 post (the first) not more. All votes in these posts should go automatic to first post and if I for one vote the second post of the poster again the website should say "you voted an other post of ... in this topic already". This should be programmable I think.

    Members like J Scott, Jon K., Jon Holdman etc. can start with more points to demonstrate there actual experience.

    Now that the influence system is gone, I have returned!!!
    JUST KIDDING!!!!

    Glad to see the new system go, I personally felt it was useless and not worthy of BP. I look forward to reading your new mission Josh, my absence from BP (as you personally know) is not due to the system or BP, but do to my "cleaning of house and extremely busy schedule. In launching a new biz, managing all my current in progress rehabs, family, and dealing with all the things that come with all of that, I simply needed a break from contributing which takes up an enormous amount of my time.

    I hope to post as often as time permits and perhaps increase that amount again once my house is in order.

    Best wishes to you Josh and the BP Family. This is still, without question, the absolute premiere RE website on Earth (perhaps in the Galaxy!)

    Will, you've been gone so long I was begging to think you got arrested! LOL Good to see ya back!

    And, I just gave Sharon a vote, I liked her comment about others feeling free to post.

    So, does that vote do anything for her, or is it just between she and I, me saying I agree and her surprise....?

    If we no longer have the influence system then why do we still have an award for it?
    Acclaimed- 10,000 influence (awarded 34 times)

    I was just wondering what the awards were and when you got them. I was not looking to start something.

    Just another item on the to do list, Bob. We'll be getting rid of that and cleaning up the awards shortly.

    Josh, you are doing a great job with BP and whatever decision you take to make this forum better, we are solidly behind you.
    Good job!

    Josh, I don't believe the awards do any damage or harm on the site. In fact, although a few or not really applicable any more, they were fun to earn and seeing others with a number of awards is one quick way to see how active and how long one has been here. I would vote to keep them. They may even still work in initiating some self competition to earn some generating positive activity on the site.

    Since this is in fact an election year, I vote to keep them going. I support the decision to eliminate the influence.

    Will Barnard - Nice to see you as always. We're not eliminating awards, but we did prune some of them today. In the coming weeks, we'll be going through the entire awards system and may even ask the members for help in brainstorming new ones....

    Excuse the bump here, but I noticed a few weeks ago the influence system was missing. I just found this thread, and thought I would chime in. While I found the influence system "fun," it really didn't add anything of value to the board. So eliminating it was the correct decision.

    It would be nice if there was some way to verify and post what experience each poster has in the Real Estate field. But anyone can say anything so it is next to impossible to verify. I am sure the board personnel have been considering this already.

    Hey Mike - Yeah . . . we've thought about it a lot. There are ways to verify, but they are very expensive and labor intensive.

    If you are going to do business with anyone here, you need to do your own due diligence, just like buying property. BP makes that due diligence easier though. Check BP references and posting history.

    Joshua

    Have you thought of possibly a system of initials under the posters avatar that would at least state what type of Real Estate Investing the Board Member has experience in? Something like:
    L=Long Term Rentals
    F=Flipper
    N=Note Buyer
    C=Commercial
    R=Realtor/Agent
    W=Wholesaler
    D=Developer
    H=Hard Money Lender
    M=Mobile Home/Lonnie Investor
    etc......
    Allow a maximum of three categories per member.

    Like Jon said, we need to do our research of BP members but if we knew what type of investing the BP Member did, it would assist in our research. It wouldn't take long in our research to find out if the member was lying about their expertise. I know I have run into that already and had to tell the member that "desiring" to do a thing is not the same as actually doing it.

    Mike - All that information exists on a user's profile. Our tagging system allows users to enter that information (they can also type it in the text fields) for that very purpose, but I don't want to clutter the forums with all that information. Again, we see that as the purpose for having a profile.

    If people don't have a complete profile, that is going to tell you something about their commitment to transparency and interest in connecting/networking.

    Then of course, you need to somehow verify that the tags the member created about themself regarding what they do is for real.

    That's right Will. No matter what you do, you need to trust people or verify. To verify takes time and money.
