Looking for a Tax Professional in the Charleston, SC Area

Hi everyone,

We’re in the Charleston (SC) area and are somewhat new to the rental world. We’re looking for a tax professional who understands medium-term and short-term rental properties. If you have someone you trust or have had a great experience with, we’d really appreciate any recommendations!

We’d also love any tips on what questions to ask and what we should be looking for.

Thanks in advance!

Lauren

@Lauren Thompson

Reach out to a few of the accountants here on BP and see who you connect with.

Consider working with your accountant remotely to expand your options.

I would also recommend looking for an accountant willing to work with you throughout the year. You want an accountant who can help you strategize and who is responsive when you want to know the consequences of the financial decisions you are making throughout the year.

Good luck.

    I'm currently playing this game at the moment. I'm interviewing two different local tax firms. I'll let you know how it turns out if you'd like.

       Patrick, thanks for responding here. Yes, that would be great if you don't mind! Always so much to learn here.

    Lauren, this forum features over 20 of real estate tax experts. We all work nationwide. But we're not allowed to offer you our services, not publicly and not privately. You would need to initiate the conversation from your end.

    And here're some tips: https://www.biggerpockets.com/forums/51/topics/1222774-expla...

    if you have a str, the first conversation should be with an accountant to see if you can treat the property as active instead of passive.

    If it is active, you will be allowed to offset the rental losses with your income such as wages, interest, dividends, etc.

    Best of luck!

    If you scroll down, there are a few great options already popping up in the replies. I’d definitely reach out to the folks mentioned there — solid options to consider.
