Hi everyone! My name is Robby and I am a new investor in Santa Cruz, CA. I am a full-time paramedic, and I am looking to start investing in real estate to start making income outside of work as I realize that I won't be able to work as a paramedic for forever. I am brand new to real estate and stumbled across this site from real estate book, and just browsing the forums on BiggerPockets, it looks like this site is going to be a great resource. This is a great place to learn and network. A lot of forum members are very knowledgeable in their respective fields related to real estate investing, whether that is real estate sales, wholesaling, flipping, rentals, lending, self-directed IRA and Solo 401k investing, or tax and legal guidance.
Good to see a handful of folks from right here in Aptos. Is anyone getting together for investor meetups locally? Probably not with COVID. I'm up for meeting and sharing ideas with anyone interested..
I just wanted to chime in and say hi. I'm new to BP this year. I live in the Santa Cruz area and just bought my first long term rental out of state in Boise, ID. I'm open to local properties if they could also provide income (IE. Duplex, ADU, etc). I'm also interested in possibly partnering on a BRRRR, Flip, and Short Term / Vacation Rentals. I know AirBnB is largely restricted in Santa Cruz although I haven't yet looked into the nuances (City vs County, etc).
Other than that, I've been reading and listening, trying to learn as much as possible. At some point I hope meet ups will start happening again! Either way, always happy to chat
Hi all, west side Santa Cruzer here, currently 3 out of state SFH rental properties in KCMO. Would love to invest locally in Santa Cruz and surrounds but just don't see how the numbers would work out. Would welcome being proven wrong. I am also from Santa Cruz. I currently got my first property in Modesto but want to invest in the area. There is a local meet up that happens once a month if you guys are interested.
I'm in westside Santa Cruz as well, I'm under contract to purchase my second duplex in Oregon. I really wish I could own a rental in the area but don't see numbers that work, maybe flipping... if I were my own contractor... which I'm most definitely not. I will look into this meetup that @Ulisses Terriquez mentioned.
Hijacking this Santa Cruz Welcome thread to see if anybody can recommend a CPA that's familiar with RE etc? I usually am able to handle taxes/ accounting on my own, but have had an unusual year and I think I've stepped out of my depth. Thanks!
@Jeremy Jackson I used Margaret Hughes at Surf City Tax in Capitola. She didn't bat an eye at my business, out of state rental and additional flip. This was my first time not prepping everything myself and it went smoothly. I called a CPA first and was directed to her, my case wasn't complicated enough for the higher priced CPA. It was certainly complicated enough that I wasn't willing to do it myself anymore.
Hello everyone in the Aptos/Santa Cruz Area. It's great to see all the people from the area on BP. I live in Aptos and my wife and Ihave a couple rentals with ADU in the area. One in Watsonville and one in Freedom. We also have some property in the central valley which has been great for us. I am very interested in attending the meetup or just getting together for coffee etc., maybe after the vaccine has been widely distributed.
Regarding accounting we use Barbara Keeley CPA at Meisser and Associates https://www.elmcpateam.com/ and they have done a great job for us.

Since then, I have immersed myself in RE information and will be getting my RE license and starting with Sereno group in Jan. Owning investment properties is absolutely a goal. Hello Santa Cruz area friends. Besides buying our house in Soquel in 2019, and house hacking our ADU, I am new to real estate investing. My tentative strategy is to BRRRR, STR and self manage within a 2 to 4 hr drive from santa cruz. I'd like to have about 7 to 10 properties in seven years that cash flow well enough to replace my firefighter income. I would be interested in partnering with people in the future who want to employ a similar strategy. Right now I am researching Fresno, Clovis, Oakhurst, Grass Valley, Oakland, Vallejo areas. I am devouring podcasts, making contacts and trying very hard to ignore any shiny objects that distract me from my strategy. I would be very interested in a local meet up. - Sage
