Free ones exist but you do get what you pay for once you grow. I used a free tier of a big name CRM when I started and it was fine for the first few hundred contacts, but the stuff that actually saves time, like automated follow ups and texting, usually gets locked behind a paid plan pretty fast.
Now I pay somewhere around 30 to 60 a month depending on the tool. The one feature I can't live without is reminders, so a lead never goes quiet because I forgot to call back.
If you only need contacts, notes and tasks, a free tier or even a simple spreadsheet works fine for the first 6 months. I'd only start paying once you know exactly which feature you're missing, otherwise you end up with add ons you never use.
@Alan Faitel there are free ones, but in my experience you end up paying somewhere, either in add-ons or in your own time. We use a paid CRM on the team side. For my own deals and notes I've been using ChatGPT projects tied to Google Drive, which has worked better than I expected for keeping track of conversations. The one thing I can't live without is reminders that actually make me follow up. The rest is nice to have. What are you using it for, mostly sellers or buyers?
Before choosing a CRM, I would list the minimum workflow: contact history, the next action, its due date and the ability to export your records. Then test a real lead from first contact through follow-up. That exposes missing features before paying for add-ons.

or do you end up putting add-ons in that makes it cost a lot of money per month?
What are you paying?
What features can you not live without?
I originally come from the computer side of life and I have a well founded phobia of "free" software that ultimately is intended to use your leads for their own purposes. Yes, any data going through someone elses server is captured. Nothing worth having is free. There is always a string attached.
