BiggerPockets Real Estate Conference: Is it time?

BiggerPockets Real Estate Conference: Is it time?

One of my goals over the past 6 years has been to produce a real estate investing conference unlike any we've seen before. I believe that BiggerPockets is in a unique position to create a conference that changes the game . . .

While most real estate investing events, seminars, clubs, conferences, etc., revolve around the guru crowd, I think the REI world is longing for something different. Just as we changed the game by creating a community dominated by actual investors and other real estate professionals with their feet on the ground, I think we can and must do the same with a BiggerPockets conference.

With that in mind, I've been brainstorming this thing for a long time now, and have had a few false starts, but I've connected with someone that I believe can help us put on a hugely successful event. He has experience putting on various large and successful conventions, and we've begun to talk about how to proceed with one for BiggerPockets.

That said, while I'm confident in my ideas, I would love to get yours as well!

So . . . here are a few questions I've got for you....

1) If BiggerPockets put on a conference, would you want to attend?
2) Would you be willing to travel (fly) to attend such an event?
3) Do you think 2 days would be adequate for a first shot at it?
4) What kinds of ideas do you have for sessions?
5) What would a BP conference look like to you?
6) Of the real estate and other events that you've attended, what is the one thing that you've liked the most?
7) The least?

Feel free to add anything else to your post . . . I'm just looking to determine the level of enthusiasm and to get some ideas from all of you.

So . . . are you psyched?

Sounds awesome Josh!

1. I would definitely attend.

2. Yup...you would have to if you wanted to attend

3. 2 days is probably fine. I would love for it to be longer, but that is probably great for a first event

4. The sessions could have people present on different topics. There are tons of investors on here and I am sure you could start a thread to solicit interest from potential presenters. You could then have people vote on who they want to see present the most or some such

5. Half presentations and half mixers/networking. Perhaps a few hours of presentation followed by structure networking followed by more presentations followed by more networking

6. I think the best events are the ones that have people hit the highlights during their presentations and encourage networking. Hours and hours of lecture doesn't make for a very appealing event IMO

7. Events where people pitch stuff in their presentation or are non-experts on subjects with an agenda

I think one of the big things missing from the experience you are looking to create are local groups too. If BP could structure leaders for local groups and coordinate times for club meetings that would make the whole experience much more powerful IMO. I have met with many BP people by phone and in person and it adds a whole new dimension to the networking. Periodic structured BP club meetings would be very powerful.

That is understandable Josh. By the looks of it, I can fly to Denver most of the time for under $400 roundtrip (fees included)...well worth it to me!

After what I thought was a promising hour long discussion, it appears that the person I thought might help manage this thing for me, isn't able to. Back to the drawing board . . .

    Joshua -

Why not turn to the BP members. There is probably a pretty good group on here that could band together and pull off a pretty damn good event. I know our company has put on about 20 events this year around the country - probably smaller in size than what you are talking about, but the process is the same. I know I would be willing to help put it on and pull the event off.

    Josh,

I know you have been very busy but have you made any progress in finding an event planner? Do you have any new leads to someone who might be able to do it?

    Ok gang . . . some updates:

1 - I've got someone to help me get things moving.
2 - We're going to check out a venue tomorrow.
3 - We're probably aiming to put this on in February (perfect for a post-conference ski weekend)
4 - I'm very hopeful that we're going to pull this off in a big way!

I'll likely be starting new threads soon to garner interest for things like sponsors, give aways, speakers, and more . . . stay tuned.

    Joshua:
    I live in Wallingford, Ct.

    I work Part-time for a Limousine Service.

Some of the slowest months in a Limo business, are January and February.
The reason is, people do NOT want to deal with the weather.
Canceled flights, missed connections, delays, etc.

As a daily visitor to this site, I know that a lot of people live in areas, where the weather could cause problems with travel to the Denver area.

I just looked at the month of February in the Denver Area, and the temperatures are from 17-49.

Josh, as another New Englander, I have to vote to some degree with Raymond. I would venture to guess that fully half the people who might attend, would be coming from northern states where the weather at their end has a big impact on travel. Not to mention the weather in Denver.

You may have already decided on the time frame and the location, but a suggestion - if you move to March, the weather starts to be less of an issue. Also, I think the more you move south and to the center of the country, the higher attendance. For example, Dallas.

I know some of you guys want to ski in Denver, but I thought I'd offer the suggestion anyway.

Having spoken at various conferences and seminars in my life, you just plan ahead for bad weather. Arrive a bit early. Having hated living in Denver/Littleton for a miserable year in 1979 (100 year winter)and having pictures of my car being towed after being stuck in snow by a tow truck, which was being towed by a LARGER tow truck, I wish it was somewhere else. ( like Vegas where there are a billion flights and great deals on hotels/meals/entertainment).
Having said that, I plan on being there, unless this is Presidents weekend (which is Parade of Homes weekend where I'll have a home to market.) Thanks to Josh for following through on this. Rich

    Joshua,

Here are the answers for me.

    1) If BiggerPockets put on a conference, would you want to attend? YES
    2) Would you be willing to travel (fly) to attend such an event? YES
    3) Do you think 2 days would be adequate for a first shot at it? YES
    4) What kinds of ideas do you have for sessions?
    1. HOW TO INVEST IN MORTGAGES, REAL ESTATE, TAX LEINS ETC USING A SELF DIRECTED IRA OR SOLO 401K (I can help with this)
    2. HOW TO POOL MONEY FOR BIG DEALS AND THE SEC RULES
    3. I WOULD HAVE BREAKOUT NETWORKING SESSIONS FOR PEOPLE TO MEET EACH OTHER
    5) What would a BP conference look like to you?
    6) Of the real estate and other events that you've attended, what is the one thing that you've liked the most? I WOULD HAVE PANEL DISCUSSIONS ON STAGE SO PEOPLE CAN SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH OTHERS
    7) The least? I DON'T LIKE MANY PEOPLE PITCHING AND TRYING TO SELL. IE PITCH A THON!

    HOPE THIS HELPS

    Josh, another thought:

Breakout sessions on various topics with panels not of professional speakers, but of actual investors doing that technique.

For example, a panel of 3-5 wholesalers from various parts of the country moderating an interactive discussion on wholesaling, where to find deals, how to build a buyer list, etc.

An you might consider duplicating the more popular breakouts in two time slots for two reasons: 1. If there are several breakouts at the same time slot, its a guarantee that there will be more than 1 that people want to go to. and 2. You will be able to get more BP folks participating and providing your panel speakers, so you will increase participation both at the event and on BP.

( If it's already been said in the 10 pages of posts, then I apologize to all, I didn't read all 10 pages)

I too would side with Rich and my vote was for Vegas, hwoever, I imagine the location is already determined to be CO. So, I will be there, or anywhere it is, schedule permitting.

The event will take place in Colorado. Perhaps later ones can happen elsewhere, but our first event will take place close to home.

Update: There is a very good chance that in the next days or week, we will be announcing the date and location of the event. I will say that the location is incredible, and we're going to be able to put on a seriously kick *** event.

    More to come soon....

    1) If BiggerPockets put on a conference, would you want to attend?

Um, yeah. Just to rub elbows with the man that's made it happen.

    2) Would you be willing to travel (fly) to attend such an event?

    Sure.

    3) Do you think 2 days would be adequate for a first shot at it?

Depends on what you want to try and cover and different tracks. You've got lots of flippers and lots of buy/hold people. However, you also have core content like tax changes, politics, etc that everyone should hear/know. 2 days goes by very quickly.

    4) What kinds of ideas do you have for sessions?

Economics. Tax changes. Dodd Frank. REO forecasts by those on the inside. Government intervention and how that will/can change the market. Self directed IRAs & solo 401(k)s.

    5) What would a BP conference look like to you?

As well organized as your website. Lots of networking opportunity. vendors. No upselling.

    6) Of the real estate and other events that you've attended, what is the one thing that you've liked the most?

No upselling. True value-add content. Networking. Up-to-date info (no binders put together in the 80s).

    7) The least?

    No content.

I don't think that's in the cards, Ricardo. But, after we pull off an event that everyone will be talking about, we will likely be doing more of these.

That said, for the price we're going to be offering this at, the 2 days of non-stop education, networking, and dealmaking that attendees get out of it will be well worth it.
