Engagements/Marriage - random thought

Here's a random thought I had regarding marriage today, specifically engagements.

What if instead of buying an engagement/wedding ring everyone simply purchased a buy/hold investment for their partner. The proceeds would be basically in perpetuity and that person could use them to buy a ring, spending money, whatever they wanted.

If I was presented with a SFH investment property instead of a ring, I would be ecstatic. A rental property is WAY better than a ring and a big fancy wedding!
