I'm currently looking into submetering a four unit building that I have in Lewiston, ME. Has anyone done it? If so, I'd love to hear who you used and your experience.
When I brought it up a few years ago, my electrician warned me that the Lewiston city inspector would go through the whole building and I may have to bring the whole building up to current code. Not something I wanted to risk in a 100+ year old building.
Jason, I'm based in the Auburn/Lewiston area. If you need an electrician, let me know I could probably send a recommendation. I am not 100% sure I know the answer, but I'm thinking you can contact CEO and find out. I've found the town of lewiston is pretty good to work.
Thanks! I was able to reach the city and it can be done. It just might be too expensive.
Are you saying that you have a 4 unit building on one meter, or are you asking about adding a house meter for the furnace and common area lighting? If you are just wanting to add a house meter it shouldn't be all that involved or a terribly expensive. If you are trying to separate out a 4 unit building that is on one meter then I think you will find it to be prohibitively expensive and will likely anger the code gods...
Yes, it's a four unit building that I'm trying to separate out. I'm quickly learning that what you said is true.
