My goals for 2020. What are yours?

One the things I learned from BP that I love the most is the goal setting for the new year. My fiance and I started this last year and really enjoyed it, for not only personal goals but couple goals. So what is everyone's goals for the next year?

Mine are the following:

1. Read 52 books. I attempted this goal last year and really enjoyed it. I got to 30 which I was actually very happy with. It forced me to develop a skill and I learned a lot about different things in the process.

2. Purchase 2 more rental properties. I set the goal for last year to purchase one and was able to achieve this through a partnership. I want to use the stack method now and continue to grow my portfolio.

3. Run a marathon. I was able to run my first half last year, which was a big accomplish as I had never ran before. I signed up for a marathon, but did not train the way I need to so I did not attempted after receiving some advice that I could really injury myself. Very much looking forward to achieving this one.

4. Double my sales as an agent. This is similar to the stack method on the portfolio. I know that if I continue to increase my sales that it will allow me to other things like expand my portfolio.

5. Have at least one date a week with my fiance. We are in the early stages of wedding planning along with her starting a new career so we have every excuses as why to not make this happen. That is why this one is the most important to me. I must carve out time every week for her and make it my most important thing I do!

I can't wait to see what I learn as I pursue each of these goals! 2019 was a blast of a year and I can't wait to make 2020 even better. What is everyone else goals? Looking to learn a new skill? Add more properties to the portfolio? Or even just be more presence in every day?

@Jon Hill I LOVE this forum thread - thanks for sharing.

I really like your goals too - funny enough I just signed my wife and I up for a Marathon as a Christmas present. We're already training lol.

    For me:

    1. Be on the general partner of a 25-70 unit apartment complex (syndication or JV).

    2. Build up to selling 5 deals per month on average by the end of 2020 in my land business (which means I need a lot more private money investors!!).

    3. Weigh 210 lbs.

@Jon Hill thanks for starting this thread. It creates some vulnerability and cultivates inspiration!

    1. Leverage my current portfolio and add 2 more cash flowing properties to my buy and holds. I currently have 8 units and would like to be at 12+ by year end.

    2. Double my sales as an agent from last year (imitation = flattery). I had a short hiatus this year as I ventured out in the corporate world and have learned a lot about myself, where I really belong, and what I truly love  --> all things real estate!

    3. Complete 2 flips. It's been a few years since my last flip and it's time to turn up the heat.

    4. Find a REI mentor to be intentional with while I work towards my goals. My network has many people in this arena, but I've never truly latched on to anyone and intend to change that.

@Jaren Barnes That is awesome on the marathon piece! When is it? I love your other three goals as well. They seem very challenging but doable. Can't wait to hear how they go!

@Michael Beinetti Happy I could help. Goal setting and pursuing is one of my favorite things. I love each of your goals as well. I step away for a short bit last year as well and realized my heart loves all things real estate. The mentor thing is a really struggle for me as well. I feel like being intentional and really focusing on those things is something we all know that we need to do, but so challenging. Along with finding someone who can push you in the right ways and support you at the same time is tough to find. Can't wait to hear how these all go!

4.) Climb top 5 most challenging 14ers in Colorado

    5.) Read 25 books

@Daniel Haberkost I love how you have both some awesome business ones along with tough personal ones. The 14ers one is really cool. I would like to do that at some point. Curious to see how the surfing goes as well. Can’t wait to hear about these!

@Dennis M. That would be one intense sitting! I think that is really cool with wanting to become the bank. I think all too often people believe real estate is completely passive which we know it is not. Being a landlord can require less time to make good money but one bad tenant can result in us being very involved. Best of luck with the goal and can’t wait to hear about both of those goals! Lol

@Jon Hill thanks! As soon as the snow melts I'm going to Aspen and hitting Capitol Peak, that one especially gets my adrenaline going just thinking about it. I'll probably be terrible at surfing but it can't be as painful to learn as snowboarding was lol.

    @Jon Hill, Yea so it's April 5th. It's called the Chicago 26.2: https://runmfg.com/events/chicago262

My wife and I are super into David Goggins, and so we're crazy inspired to get after "callusing our minds".

    When is yours?

Over 1 million in commission for 2020. Already looking to hit that off of existing clients even with no more new clients business for 2020.

Hire an acquisitions/analyst director for my company.

Break into the 8's minute per mile average for running. Currently at 9:05 average and run minimum 12 miles at a time about 3 to 4 times a week. Weight is about 183 so want to shed off about the last 15 to 20 pounds left of fat. I am 45 years old so already considered a senior runner for age...lol  You do see a huge difference in your body from your 20's and 30's to your 40's.

20's to 30's I noticed a slight difference occasionally but negligible. Then when I got into late 30's to 40's I really started noticing more the changes. I still feel great at my age that I can exercise and my cardio is great. Goal setting is not really a competition. I used to look a long time ago at what others are doing. Now I just set my own goals and only focus on what I am doing because my happy life and how I am fulfilled is not by how others define success in their lives. That is their goal, focus, and way of life. Instead I focus on what makes me happy and my ideal life I want to create and be living everyday.

It's like the singer Tony Bennett once mentioned. He mentioned something like drown out the noise of everything else and focus on the one path you want to take and then put everything you got into it. I say NO a lot these days to inquiries. If it doesn't fit what my life plan is then I politely tell them we are not a fit. I am happiest when I know I am sticking to my daily plan of how I want to live my life.

How much money someone wants is an individual question. I know some people that stop at 1 million,3 million, 10 million, 50 million, etc. Now they still try to outpace inflation and have some extra growth hitting maybe annual 6 to 8% returns before tax depreciation benefits but are not in hyper growth mode anymore. They are basically in coast mode now.

@Daniel Haberkost That is awesome. How do you plan on learning surfing? That is something down the line I have interest in learning. I am still learning skiing and it has been rough!

@Jaren Barnes That is awesome. Best of luck to both of you! I haven’t signed up yet. I am planning on the fall with a friend. After reading your post though we know we need to get signed up soon to keep ourselves accountable.

@Joel Owens I love your Joel’s. I couldn’t agree more on finding goals for yourself. Earlier on I spent more time feeing like if I didn’t accomplish what others viewed as success that I wasn’t successful. Now I focus on completing things I actually want to do. I feel a lot happier. I love sharing goals and seeing how unique and different everyone’s goals are.

Those are some impress miles times and distances! Keep up the great work on that. Can’t wait to hear about how these go!

    1. Add 1,000 units to my portfolio.

    2. Sell 1,000 units

    3. Launch a book in the spring!

#2 means that to accomplish #1 I have to buy 2,000 units.  That's double what I bought in 2019 so we'll see what the market provides.  If there isn't opportunity, I'm perfectly fine if I buy 0 units in 2020.

@Brian Burke Those are some awesome goals. I love that you said if it doesn’t make sense you are okay with not buying anything. All to often we get caught up with the goal and force it to happen even when sometimes it no longer is in our best interest.

Do you have topic pick out for the book?

Indeed.  It's called "The Hands-Off Investor:  An insider's guide to investing in passive real estate syndications"

I'll show new and experienced passive investors how to find and screen syndication sponsors and investment opportunities, along with a healthy dose of advanced real estate investment analysis (so that passive investors can spot when sponsors are manipulating projections).

The book is written, and now in round two of editing.  BP is publishing it...maybe I should have goal #4: Be the top-selling book on BP!  OK that one is unacheivable but it never hurts to think big.  LOL

Mine are actually fairly similar to yours.

    1. Read/listen to 5 books per month

    2. Date night with my wife once per month

    3. Buy my first rental before thanksgiving

    4. Find a way to create an additional $100 per month.

@Jon Hill my friend and I have been tentatively planning a week or so trip to southern CA for this winter and we plan to pay for lessons while there. It’s so cheap to fly to LAX from Denver that it wouldn’t be a big deal to head out that way several times this year.

And I’m not the best at snowboarding yet either so I definitely get that!

    @Jon Hill

My significant other and I have one main goal for 2020: buy our first rental property (ideally something we can house hack). We are both very new to the real estate world and have spent the latter half of this year learning and figuring out what we want to do. 2020 is our year to take action!

    My goals are:

-Build credit good enough to get pre approved for an FHA 203k loan (I'm currently around the 600 mark since I don't really have much of a credit history)

-If possible for 2020, finding a realtor that knows about real estate investing properties and house hacking as soon as I find a good deal. If I'm not able to do this for the 2020 it WILL be done in 2021.

-Save enough for at least 20% down to avoid the mortgage insurance, a bit more for closing costs and 3- 6 months worth of savings.

-Graduate from cosmetology school around September 2020 and get a job in that field as soon as a graduate.
