Hello all. New to the site. I live in NY full time but a fair amount of time in Columbus with my own secondary residence in Dublin and I have 4 rental units in Columbus area. Kindve landed in this life by accident but I've got the bug and am looking to ramp up my business in the next few years. Just wanted to say hello and get my feet wet here.

I am investing in Columbus for a long time. Happy to connect!
Hey Kevin, welcome to BiggerPockets! Sounds like you've built a great foundation already with four rental units in the Columbus area. It's funny how real estate has a way of starting by accident and then turning into something much bigger. Columbus has been a strong market with steady growth, so it sounds like you're in a great position to keep building your portfolio. Wishing you the best as you continue to scale, and I hope you find some great opportunities along the way.

Sounds like you've already built a solid foundation with four units, and it's funny how real estate has a way of turning into something much bigger than originally planned. Since you already know the Columbus market, you're in a great position to keep scaling. Keep building your local network and staying patient with your acquisitions, the right deals are still out there. Best of luck, and welcome to the community!

@Kevin Gilligan Jr Welcome to the community! Sounds like you've already built a solid foundation with four rentals in Columbus. Since you're planning to grow over the next few years, connecting with local investors, property managers, and contractors can really help as you scale. Wishing you continued success!
Welcome to BP! Columbus is a solid market to be building in. From my experience, the cash flow and appreciation story here is real, especially in the south and east side pockets.

Welcome to BiggerPockets, Kevin! Sounds like you've already got a solid start with four rentals under your belt. Funny how that happens—one property turns into a hobby, then suddenly you're thinking about the next five. Since you already spend time in Dublin, you're in a great position to keep an eye on the Columbus market. There's been a lot of growth there over the past few years, and if you're planning to expand, there are still opportunities to find properties that cash flow while benefiting from the area's strong job and population growth. Looking forward to seeing what you pick up next and hearing about your journey. Happy to connect and answer any questions you have!

@Kevin Gilligan Jr Welcome to the BP, Kevin. Splitting time between NY and Ohio with a second residence and rentals in the same market is worth getting cleaned up early, before you ramp up further. New York taxes worldwide income for full year residents, so your Ohio rental income is going to show up on your NY return regardless of the days split, and you'll also owe Ohio nonresident tax on that same income since the property sits there, the credit for taxes paid to Ohio is what keeps you from getting hit twice, but only if it's calculated and filed correctly on both ends.
Worth also nailing down residency days if NY and Ohio's rules don't clearly agree on which state you're domiciled in, states get aggressive about claiming full residency when someone splits time between two, and that changes your tax picture more than the rental income itself does. As you scale up the Columbus portfolio, entity structure and whether you eventually qualify for real estate professional status become bigger levers too, especially since REPS material participation hours can get complicated to track when you're not physically in Ohio full time.
Hey Kevin, welcome to the community! I’m also based right here in New York (handling the Capital District / Upstate area).I don't have personal experience in the Columbus market, but I know it's a massive hub for out-of-state investors right now—wishing you immense success on your rentals out there! Managing remote rehab logistics can definitely be a learning curve, so if you ever have any questions about local Upstate New York metrics, property preservation, or need to swap notes on running fast construction timelines, I'm always happy to help. Let's connect and keep tabs on each other's pipelines!

Welcome, Kevin! Sounds like you’ve built a great foundation already. It’s always interesting to hear how people “accidentally” get into real estate and end up loving it. Wishing you continued success as you grow your portfolio!
