First time buyer in CT : multifamily , condo ,or single family ?
I’m a first-time buyer in Connecticut trying to decide the smartest way to get into real estate.
I’m a single father with a young child, so renting out bedrooms to roommates isn’t something I’m interested in. If I house hack, it would need to be a multifamily where my child and I have our own private unit.
My original goal was to buy a 2–4 unit multifamily and have rental income help with the mortgage, but with Connecticut prices I’m wondering if a condo or single-family would make more sense as a first step.
I have funds in a retirement account that I intentionally plan to use toward investing, along with employer home-buying assistance. I also have some collections that may need to be addressed, but I haven’t spoken with a lender yet to determine what actually needs to be paid.
For someone in my position, would you pursue the multifamily now, start with a condo/single-family and move into investing later, or wait and save more for the multifamily?
Would especially appreciate advice from anyone familiar with the Connecticut market.
