Direct Mail Advice

What are your tips for the best direct mail results? I've sent out my 1st touch of a 5 touch campaign and got 13 calls. So I am just over 1% right now (could get a few more calls next week of course) But this letter was a hand written envelope, typed up letter, hand stamped, and hand signed. Wanted to know what your results to direct mail have been and what has been your key to success? And what do you avoid?
