What has been your experience investing in a small business?

During this pandemic, I have worked with skilled trades that help with rehabs on houses. Some of them are just starting off, but already have some good processes in place. I was going to ask them if they are looking for any investors as a way to grow their business, which could be a be a benefit for them. For me, we know it is difficult to find skilled tradesman, so this would give me options for future work on rentals.
